    hey everyone

i have a 2a with a 225 dauntless from a 67 commando. it has the 2 barrel intake and rochester carb on it right now, and its pretty dismal and coughes back alot.

i've been on the trail of a 4 barrel intake for months now and read everything i could find on this forum and whatever else i could dig up on the internet. since then i've aquired 2 different intakes and a holley 390 4 barrel that i had rebuilt at my local machine shop.

I bought 2 manifolds on ebay so far, both offenhauser 360's. unfortunatly the 1st one wouldn't bolt up quite right it was close but the bolts were binding too much. i was using the gaskets appropriate for the 67 motor and haven't tried later model gaskets, maybe that would help that manifold.

the second manifold came in the mail just a couple days ago and this one looks like a newer version of the 360 since the ports on top are 2 large opening rather than 4 holes for each barrel. needless to say this one was even further from fitting. i took some measurements and some pictures that i will include below.

    #'s off the stock intake: B-137 8704-E
"width" (see pictures to see the exact place i'm talking about)
    7 1/2" across

#'s off the 1st offenhauser (older 4 barrel): no numbers visible.
    "width": 7 1/4"

    #'s off the 2nd offenhauser (newer): 2-20-80
    "width": 7 1/4"

just for reference the stock 2 barrel intake is orange

the 1st offenhauser has no heater hose outlet, 4 individual barrels on top and on the side ports has the ports kind of sectioned off (written in sharpie "231 odd fire" on the carb mounting area)

the 2nd offenhauser has multiple places for the heater hoses and sending units...ect. as well as the 2 large holes on top and standard looking ports on the sides.

stock intake with the 2nd offenhauser behind it
    [IMG]

1st offenhauser..sorry they are pictured out of order
    [IMG]

stock intake view of the side ports
    [IMG]

1st offenhauser side ports (i didn't scrape off the RTV yet)

    2nd offenhauser side ports
    [IMG]

here's the "width" i was talking about (stock manifold)

same measurement on the 2nd manifold..the 1st and second offenhauser were the same "width"

here are some views from the front of each manifold just to note the differences in the water outlets and stuff like that.

stock manifold: has outlet for heater hose and sending unit
    [IMG]

1st offenhauser: has no outlet for heater hose, only sending unit
    [IMG]

2nd offenhauser: has at least one outlet for the heater hose, and auxiliaries, plus sending unit.

finially here are some serial numbers found on the stock manifold and the SECOND offenhauser only

    stock:

    2nd manifold:

so this is where i stand, i've got eveything i need to get the 4 barrel working except a good mateup for an aftermarket 4 barrel manifold. its not the most popular mod from what i can find on the internet, but i think it's possible.

maybe i just need to get the 1st offenhauser milled to fit or those gaskets from later model 231's. i'm at wits end, but at least now i can get people to measure the manifold before i buy it.

any input would be appreciated. thanks

    Paul

    UPDATE:

i got in touch with the seller on the ebay auction for the 2nd offenhauser, here's the link:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190271693776&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&viewitem=

anyway as you can see in that listing this was a risk purchase due to the repair but for 26 bucks you can't go too wrong. but i looked at the repair and it's legit, welded well and milled flat. i'm sure it wouldn't leak, but it doesn't fit anyway so that's not really my concern.

i got in touch w. the hot rod shop that did this sale and talked to one of their guys. the person who did the actual listing isn't going to be in til monday so i won't hear from the horse's mouth til then.

anyway the guy i did talk to confirmed that the part # i have on this manifold only fits 61-63 buick/jeep motors...but i was under the impression that a dauntless motor was a dauntless and if its suppose to fit on it should fit most. he also turned down the idea of different intake gaskets remedying any problems with fitment.

BTW here's the part no. on this manifold in particular. i found it on the box, didn't see it before: 5711
it also shows fit for a 196 motor so this is obviously my issue.

anyway if anyone knows the exact number i do need that might help

    thanks again

Have you check your block casting numbers and heads to make sure you don't have a 231?

Your stock intake # B1378704-E is the same as my stock intake on my 69 225V-6 so it suggests that ,as you said, you do have a 225.The number on the second offy looks like a date of 2-20-80 = feb. 20, 1980 when it was most likely cast.Definitely looks to be a 360 equa-flow so here are some model numbers to look for.
    #5712 =1962 to 63 for quadrajet
#5713=1964 to 72 for AFB carb
    #5714=1964 to 72 for quadrajet
I cant help with the measurements tonight but may be able to compare later to an offy dual port 360 # 6035-DP that I got stashed, that one is designed to fit from 1964 to 72 225 V-6

Edit [ Offy says that your supposed to use special intake gaskets with the #5713 and #5714 intake, offys part # for those gaskets was #5996 ]

Approminently 7 1/2" to 7 5/8" is the measurement for the 225 oddfire intake manifold as verified from a unit I have.

    Oz,

I am in search of just what you show in your photo, an Offy 6035 intake for Holley carb and 5996 gasket for my '71 CJ5 225 V6. Where did you get, or do you have spare? What Holley do you suggest?

I have been using Holley 8007 390 cfm with electric choke. Just bought two of em from Jegs 360 each with free shipping. If ya do a search there are several others out there. Carb brands are like Ford Vs. Chev--- everybody seems to have a favorite. The 390 seems to be really flexible for the v6. Gets pretty good mileage too.

Offy intakes and gaskets available from Summit, TA Performance for sure. I have run the 390 in the past, run the TA470 now, and will be messing with FI in the winter.

Yep, the Holly 390 is probably the most popular square flange carb for this application and once jetted and set up properly it works well with the Offy manifold. I took a quick look at Summit and see that they have the 6035DP listed for $316,... I couldn't find the gaskets listed at Summit.I bought mine(manifold and gaskets) at a local auto parts store several years ago, they had to order it in but it only took a few days.

I also bought a ebay offenhauser dual port intake hoping it would fit my 225, but it was too narrow and I could not bolt it up. I figured it was for a 198.. Oh well..
