I was trying to wire up my horn but my steering box doesn't have the hole in the bottom of it. It's in a 62 CJ5, there is a button on the steering wheel and a horn on the fender but the ground wire is just hanging loose in the engine compartment. I'm guessing this box was swaped in from something else. Any guess on what it came of of?

Judging by the OD paint, I wonder if it was from a military Jeep, or maybe NOS for one.
Didn't the military versions have the horn tin the steering wheel like the civvies tho?

I was looking around on the 503 page and it looks like I've got an early style ross box that was swapped in at some point. I check last night to see if I had the early column where the horn wire exits above the box but no such luck. Looks like I might be going with the dash mounted horn button.

I bought a NOS ross that goes in an M-38a1. It is the corret bigger box for the 5's with the v6. Mine doesn't have a hole either.

I was just going to make a hole and put the wire through it and maybe silicone the hell out of it.

Can't you do that with the one you have?

'Spose you can, but the original set-up is a tube that runs above the oil fill line. That, and you'll have to run a fish wire up through to the top to be able to pull your wire/button assy down thru. See #8 here:http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/Photos/Tech/Steering/SteeringGear.JPG Then you get to fight the leak you created by drilling a hole in the bottom of an oil-filled gearbox. IMO, put a switch on the column or dash and be done.

yup it should have a small square a few inches above the box on the column for the wire contact. though it may not if just the box was swapped
