I'v got a 74 CJ with 1976 wider 4" lift springs & a 1-1/2" shackle lift. I'v just received my new cv joint drive shaft and installed it. The cv joint binds when you try to spin the shaft. It looks like it might work if I tilt the rear axle up alot. Is this a good way to correct the angle? Is there a better way? Who sells large taper shims for the rear axle? If I lower the t-case will that cause problems with the shifters hittin the body? Any info would help. Thanks.

I believe the rear joint should be straight...need to shim or relocate the perches to raise the pinion

Cut the sping perches off and weld new ones on to correct the pinion angle.. Yes it looks like a lot of angle on the pinion but has held up to over 3K miles on mine so far.

Right, the pinion will be fine at the high angle as long as it gets oil. You may want to overfill some.

There are sources for steel angle shims. If you search old posts for "caster shims" you will find some sources. Avoid aluminum shims.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll relocate the perches. And I was hoping I was almost done.

I put on a cover with a high fill port to give extra capacity just in case. Never can be too careful.

Good idea on the cover. How much extra oil did you add?

Also, Tom Wood's http://www.4xshaft.com/driveline101.html warns that overfilling may cause foaming. They suggest adding ATF (contains detergent) to lower the surface tension of the oil and reduce foaming. Just FYI.

This is what I did. Just use a stock cover from a Ford front D44. Don't know if a Chevy or Dodge has the high fill or not.
