    Greetings,
We are restoring a 59' CJ6 for her 50th anniversary. She has been in the family for 30 years but sat unattended for the last 25 years.

My question is about the primer or what may be the original color. Under the faded red paint, the chassis is white. We can not decide if it is primer or the jeep was originally all white. Thoughts on this are appreciated.

Did the original CJ6 come with emergency flashers? What did the switch look like and where was it located?

We are trying to restore her to be as stock as possible but not having pictures of the unit is proving difficult.

    Thanks!

'59 is pretty far back for me, but I have only seen frames (chassis) painted chassis black or military green (OD) from the Jeep factory. All the car manufacturers used dull black because it hides the mechanical bits and draws attention to the shiny paint and chrome. I'd guess the white is from a respray.

There is no way to ID the original color other than by sanding the original body work down to the primer. Not sure what the primer color would be, maybe gray or dark green. Again, typical practice is to use a primer that is close to the shade of the final coat. That way chips do not stand out and full coverage with the top coat is easier.

1959 factory colors are here: http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Paint2.html

No factory emergency flashers on cars until the mid 60s.

Sometimes you can find the original color hiding up under the dash -- where they'd skip in a re-spray.

    Howdy from another 6 owner...

Thanks for the response, I might take a look under the dash and see what colors are there. Mike's site was the first place that I found that had good pictures of a CJ6. I am always trying to find pictures of what a 50's era CJ6 looked like stock so that I can restore mine more easily. I am currently investigating the tail lights, the PO put some indented lights that I know are not stock.

    Thanks for the help!

there is a book called "CJ" it covers the history of the cj, has a chapter in it with a lot of pictures of cj6's, but the biggest difference of the 6 from the 5 is the length,
by the way, hello from an another cj6 owner
