Maybe you should send it to Herm and get it done right.

I haven't heard of that being a common breakage point, at least not that many times in one year. It sounds more like sub-standard parts, an improper rebuild, or a combination of the two.

    Welcome from Boston.

A little more info would be helpful. Are you breaking the gears, or is there excess wear? Are you using old factory parts, or new aftermarket? How fast are you shifting this transmission? The Borg-Warner 3-speeds are not fast shifters - no power shifting allowed.

A T-14 for a 258 CJ is basically a throw-away transmission for the crawler crowd. You should be able to find a good used transmission cheaply and easily. Start with a different core with good OEM gears, and a different rebuilder.

its breaking off teeth on both 2nd and the cluster gear....i believe i read somewhere that on the inline 6 they used a 26 tooth 2nd gear and on the v6 they used a 25 tooth gear.......now from what i see my 2nd gear is 26 teeth yet theyre using a 25 tooth counter gear on the cluster, now correct me if im wrong but shouldnt my cluster gear have the 26 tooth counter gear???

no i do not shift fast ,no i dont crawl ,no i dont off road. i had a company rebuild this so what parts they used i dont know.
also this engine/tranny set up had its own special bellhousng from what im told so therefore id need a bellhousing aswell to change the tranny to a diff. one

I don't have a parts book for the V6 era, but I thought that the T-14s are all the same except for the input shafts. I've never heard of the tooth count difference thing.

The tooth count on the main shaft gear and the cluster gear does not need to match. If you have the transmission apart, you can determine whether the tooth count matches the specified gear ratio. Count the teeth on the input gear and the cluster gear, and divide the input count by the cluster count to get the reduction ratio for the cluster gear. The count the teeth on the 2nd gear on the cluster and on the main shaft, divide the cluster count by the mainshaft count, and multiply the cluster gear reduction by that ratio. That will give you the 2nd gear ratio.

Call Herm and ask him. www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com You may end up putting your transmission in a box and sending it to him.

    thanks Tim!
i called Herm and as it turns out the teeth count is correct for my set up,and i was correct the set up for the v6 is diff.,the 2nd gear does have a diff. tooth count.
as it appears the company i used is most likely using inferior parts
