Bare with me guys.....I'm just getting back into this..............plus all my experience was with a 258 not a 225.......

I would like to get a high output alternator...........will a high output alternator for a 231 Buick work with the 225 v6? I saw where the HEI ignition system will work with it..........

I can only run a few things at a time on my current alternator........if I run the heater I cannot run the radio..........and at night when the engine idles down the dim down to a poinit that it is almost impossible to see.........

    Thanks for the help!!

I have been reading and rearching.

The way you describe it, it is not a question of needing higher output. The standard unit should perform very well unless you have a huge number of add-on accessories.

I would check out your present alternator/regulator/battery system for faults. If the starter is working okay, maybe the problem is in your wiring harness. Is the "hot" wire to your ignition switch in good shape? ....Etc, Etc.

Starter works fine.........I thought it was the alternator as well.

I have only lights, heater, and a radio........thats it.

    Something is up with it....

To your original question - search on One Wire Alternators and you should find a list that works. In general - any GM Alt wired properly will work on the 225s including the 231 ones.

I use a one wire 100A unit from Summit Racing. About $90.
It's a bolt in if you remove the spacer on the lower mounting bolt.

I have a 231 but did not realize it when I bought my 120 amp, thought it was a 225. Bolted right in. There is a place here that will build any size you want within reason....$1 per amp!

If your starter keeps on working, it suggests to me that the alternator and charging system is okay, and the battery is good.

The lack of power elsewhere may be a poor connection in your wiring harness beyond the starter-solenoid junction, or something of that nature.

Check the V belt it could be loose or glazed letting the belt slip.
