well I think I have had enough. maybe there's an explanation? my :v6: requires a tune up and carb rebuild every year around oct. always has screwed up timing. I crawl low and slow with my family. (wife,4yr.,6yr. old boys) I never do any hair raising off road and we don't have rocky trails. My jeep only sees 35 mph(tops) on the 2 miles of pavement to the logging roads. I run 32x9 swampers and have 5:38 differentials Would the F 134 handle those tires? does the Hurricane require as much maintenance? when my :v6: gets it's yearly tune up it runs awesome! I am just looking for a little less tuning and more driving. It always seems to go to crap right before I plan a big weekend with it leaving everyone disappointed. :?

I run the same tires with my :hurrican:. Instead of an engine swap have you considered changing the points to a Pertronix? This should help your driveability issues. It's great not having to play with points.

Ummm...an engine swap to get out of a tuneup seems a bit severe...these are 40 YO rigs after all.

Do the pertronix as suggested or a later model HEI swap and most of that will probably go away, but otherwise just plan for the tuneup. It's part of the experience...;)

I'm not sure why you have to do so much to it. Mine is my DD and it's relatively maintenance free. (I do have the Pertronix instead of points). I do check/ adjust the idle mixture a couple times a year, but it's rarely out.

How often do you drive it? If it sits the points could get corroded enough to where it won't run good.

In the summer I drive it 20 miles a day and then it goes to crap without warning. what would you all recommend hei or petronix? I am going to search for posts on both of these right now. just another thing I dislike about the 225 is parts are not readily available like the 134.

I can't remember 1 time in 5 years needing half of the power it has. the fuel mileage is nothing to complain about for what it is. so that is another option to weigh. how is the f head's economy?

I would suggest taking it to someone who can fix it right for you.
You'll need a Delco distributor if you're gonna go Petronix.

I have a dual point Mallory, in 10 years it has been adjusted, uh once, the day I put it in. The dwell is rock steady so is the timing. The points have about 9000 miles on them. The only glitch with the Mallory is the mechanical advance is kinda tricky to get set right. I would go with the HEI if your having that much trouble. The carb should not need rebuilt that often if the engine is ran, the fuel is evaporating out of the bowl from sitting and then oxidizing when its dry. Driving it more often will help.

That's the first time I've heard that I do believe. The only tune up parts the local parts store might not have would be the distributor cap and rotor. In my experience anyhow.

i agree an engine swap is extreme. You obviously have a problem with it. You might try having your carb professionally rebuilt . sounds like the lack of driving it regularly could be the problem. " I can't remember 1 time in 5 years needing half of the power it has." you need to give her the old italian tuneup once in a while :)

The HEI takes a bit more work than the Pertronix. I like the HEI, but then the Pertronix in the wife's Mustang was a snap to install as well.

If you don't have the Delco Distro - go HEI as I think it would even out with the cost of getting the Delco and Pertronix.

I've been running the Pertronix for 3+ years now with no issues. Just make sure the Delco you put it in is solid; meaning no excessive play in the shaft. The directions are explicit in the tolerances. For my approximately $100 (including used Delco) investment, it's definitely worth a shot. Not sure on the advantages of a :hurrican: swap, but from strictly an MPG standpoint I don't believe it would be worth it. FWIW, in 26+ years, I've never had a TRUE parts availability issue owning a :v6:. Although I'm biased; in your case replacing a :v6: with a :hurrican: at this stage seems a bit more trouble than it's worth... Of course, this is JMHO!!

I have been researching the HEI and pertronix conversions and it gives me a great deal of optimism. I do have a delco distributor I think? what other kinds could it be? sorry for the ignorance.:?

Some had a Prestolite distributor. Even if you need to buy a distributor, they can be had. I just bought a new Delco for mine 2 weeks ago from my local parts store. ~65 bucks.
