Need T-18 identification tips

I have a '75 with the 3-speed trans and want to upgrade to a 4-speed granny. I found a T-18 w/ Dana 20 apparently out of a mid-late 70's CJ7. How can I tell by looking at it that it is in fact a T-18 and will work in my '75 CJ5? The seller also said he has a bell housing that will fit with my '75. Thanks for your help.

Here's mine out of a '71 V6...Keep in mind it has the "adapters" on it front and rear to fit it to the V6 and D18 T case...

What do you think a good price should be for the T-18, Dana20 and bell housing?

The information on Novak is great, but some of it isn't very clear. For example, "Casting numbers commonly found on Jeep truck T18's are #13-01-192, #13-01-193, #13-01-209, #13-01-210, which are typically the close ratio versions of the Jeep T18 transmission" is either a typo or does not make any sense or both. AFAIK, no close ratio transmissions were delivered in Jeep trucks, but only in CJs and Commandos.

If this transmission really came from a CJ-7, it could be either a close-ratio or wide-ratio version. The wide-ratio version is the desirable "granny gear" type. Quoting Nick, these can be told apart by either the tooth count on the input shaft: 17 teeth means 6.32: 1st (granny gear, wide-ratio), while 23 teeth means a 4.02:1 (close ratio) transmission. The close ratio transmission also uses a plate adapter between the bell and the transmission, while the wide ratio does not, IIRC.

If you want the crawler gears, be sure that this is a wide ratio transmission. There's nothing wrong with the close ratio transmission, except that it does not have the desirable very low first gear. The ratios are very good otherwise, and it's a big upgrade over the 3-speeds. If I found a close ratio transmission for a good price, I'd certainly buy it and put it in one of my Jeeps.

Price? $100 is cheap. $500 is still a bargain if it's the wide ratio transmission and all the parts are in good shape. $1000 is too much for me. A lot depends on how much you want it.
