My 67 225 v6 is running bad. Its real rough and backfires occationally through the carb and exhaust. It could be anything because iv replaced everything and it wasnt this bad before. It really sounds like a missfire but the exhaust and all the plugs are very sooty. Its got new cap and rotor plugs and wires and all have been checked for goodness. I rebuilt the carb a couple times but im still not sure if the float level is right. I checked the manifold vacume at both sides on the old egr ports and the passenger side is good but the driver side fluctuated like mad. I checked compression and its all good there also pulled the valve cover and all looks good. I dont know what else to do there.
Timing and coil is good and points look good. I tried all different idle mixture settings without significant change there. The vacume advance seems to suck all the time is it suposed to only when its reved up? I disconected and pluged the pvc port to make sure that wasnt doing anything weird. I started putting old parts back on. Im out of ideas :?

Suggest you recheck firing order, just a suggestion. But I believe Patrick may have been down this road also.

cam worn? How many miles on this? When I tore down my 6 the lobes on the cam were way bad. The PO had put new everything ignition related to try to fix the problem but no werky. I have never seen a cam that bad.

good suggestion but judging by the limited wear of the engine id say pretty unlikely. it has 18k on the odometer but the cable was busted when i got it. it was last registered in 76 and used for a plow jeep since then. Also the inside is pretty clean and it seemed to be somewhat well maintained with oil changes. Something to look into though. Ill definatly recheck the firing order and maby change the plugs again. When i pull one wire at a time when its running it really doesnt make a difference so i cant tell if one is causing the problem or not

Have you made sure your distributor isn't excessively worn? I had a problem with my CJ5 that led me to being.lieve that the points/condenser needed replacement. Running sluggish missing every so often etc. I replaced all the wires, plugs, points, condenser, and cap. When I tried to fire it up again the engine tried to reverse rotate and wound up literally stripping 1/3 to 1/2 of the teeth on the timing wheel. Found out later that the distributor had worn too much and led to the engine firing WAY out of order. A block rebuild later along with a new distrubitor all is good. Sometimes it's something you wouldn't have figured (this distributor wasn't that old either). Good luck I hope you figure out what's happen
