    Hi,

I have a 46' Cj-2A, that is lifted, with dana 44 axles front and rear, full cage.... Mild off-road vehicle, hard top, used on the street a lot.

Problem is, I have a 1963 Studebaker 170 OHV engine, that I rebuilt 4 years ago, but it never has had quite enough power for my use. I would like to swap to something fuel injected and I think I like the Buick V-6 option the best, mated to my stock T-90. So what donor vehicles does this leave me with? Also, besides the adaptor from the bell housing to the T-90, what do I need?

    Thanks,

    Randy

In case that didn't come out clear, what automobile came with the 231 fuel injected for RWD application?

    Thanks again.

You now have a Studebaker inline 6? I presume that your firewall has been set back to accomodate the engine. The Studebaker 6s were popular in the olden days becasue Studebaker used the T-90 in cars, and no adapter was needed. They still had the problem of the length of the inline 6 engines to deal with though.

I'd be very interested to see pictures of the current installation. You may have enough room for another inline 6 cylinder in your engine compartment, since there is already an inline engine there. The V6s are the usual choice becasue they fit well in the short engine compartment, but your engine compartment has already been lengthened.

How much of a power boost are you looking for? The 4.3L (262 cid) Chevy V6 is a popular and inexpensive option. You could likely install this engine easily in place of the inline 6, without moving the drivetrain around. This engine comes in carbureted, TBI (throttle body injected) and MPI (multiport injected) versions - take your pick.

Any GM engine will require the GM adapter and a new transmission input shaft. Either Chevy or Buick/Olds/Pontiac (BOP) engine bells will bolt up to this adapter. You'll need to install new motor mounts, connect the clutch somehow, plus all the wiring and plumbing.

Lots of info if you browse the Novak site: www.novak-adapt.com

The studebaker is a tight fit. However the cylinders are siamese, so the overall length of the block is not too long. That said, I did modify the firewall, a little, maybe 3/4 inch, and the radiator is snug against the shaved grill.

I'm not looking for huge HP, the buick 231 or 4.3 Vortec would be plenty. Did the Buick 231 come with fuel injection, other than the Grand National? I'm not super crazy about the 4.3 Vortec, but the HP and fuel injection would meet my needs.

    Thanks,

    Randy

I know there was never any EFI with the odd fire engines, but don't know about later even fires. There's something of a list of applications in the technical library, formatted wrt casting numbers though: http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/engines/225/castingNumbers.php

If you don't get a response, try posting in the "Early CJ-5" tech forum here - you will have a better chance of catching the eye of one of the more Buick-savvy guys there.
