Does it make sense that my D44 leaks gear oil from the vent hole when I store it with the pumpkin pointed up? Or do I have a bad seal?

Mike: Yes the oil will leak out the vent....the inner seal is next to the rear wheel bearing on a 44. Not like the front 25, 27, 30 models where the seal is located next to the carrier bearings. So the oil on a model 44 can run down both axle tubes. If you do alot of sidehilling you could run the ring and pinion dry. Good Luck!! Glenn

Is your vent simply a small hole in the back of the axle tube, DS, like mine?

The only way I have found to correct this is to increase the cross sectional area of the vent by:
    1: increase the fitting/hose size.
2: add another vent (fitting/hose) of same same or larger (so you have two vents). This can be done on the opposite side of the axle as existing vent or added to diff cover on passenger side on backside of ring gear (less oil turbulence).

(Make sure you have not over filled diff)

Yep, sorry should have made that clear (thought all the early D44's were setup this way.)

Ok, so as stated, there are no seals between the diff and the vent, so yes, it will leak when turned pinion up.....
