Yup, no arguing with that!!! This is where I pretty much decided to keep Putt Putt a 4 cyl and build a V-6 CJ5. One thing to note --the PO installed a heavier flywheel on this L-134 which is an old trick that helps 4-cylinders retain more crank momentum for torquage (My Cousin Vinny) ;)

Thanks for everyone's input. I feel a little more satisfied with my plans now. I'm probably going to do a 2.5" lift and 31's or 32's. Well, and all the basic maintainance stuff.

Not to start a new thread, but what would my stock gearing be?

    My 5 with the f head had/has 4.27s in it. ;) I have new front & rear diffs with 5.38s. 8)
    Wanted slow and steady. 8)
One thing to note here is that in the rocks you dont want speed.
I've seen guys here rip up a steep climb with V8s scream'n at redline and then a small 4 banger crawl right up the same trail. Burns em up. :D

Thats the way I was taught, to quote "The stupid will get you in trouble off raod! This is not a drag car." Thus ended my 1st off road lesson. Summer of '80.

:hurrican: For your year the stock gears are probably 4.27 as mentioned. Everyone definitely covered what the F-head can and can't do.

there is no way in heck that you can go off roading without lockers front and rear, 6.33 gears, 38 boggers, atlas case and the biggest honkenest engine you can find

LOL thank goodness for this group!
