    Greetings,
I am picking up a 50's cj3a on sunday with no engine tranny or tcase. Wondering if anyone had dropped an amc v8 in a flatty. wondering if the frame width might be close so you could use the stock amc engine to frame mts. I found a good deal on a 304, 3 spd, dana 20 and wonder if it might make a good swap. It has the offset 44 so i would probably loof for a centered 44.
    Thanks for any input.

I don't think there's much difference in difficulty between swapping in the 304 vs, the usual SBC. There's no particular advantage to the 304 in the swap either. The 304 is a typical V8 from the era. Motor mount difficulty is likely the same. Plumbing the same. Size and clearance about the same.

The T-15 that should come with the 304 is a good, sturdy transmission. The D20 doesn't have as much reduction as the original D18, but owners seem to get by with it anyway. The D20 does not have the worn-out-intermediate-shaft problem either, and it's quieter.

You can do it. More work than a V6 swap, but doable.
