I am wondering what the approx. weight of a 73 cj5 is /with whatever engine.
I am looking at a variety of engines to put in mine. Anything from a VW diesel to a 351 Ford.
I have also been looking at diesels from 4000, 5000 and 6000 Ford tractors. These engines used a Ford smallblock belhousing and were 60-78 hp. Turbo'd would increase the #'s 15 hp.

Ya, I looked around some, but cant get close enough. An older VW diesel will handle up to about 2400 lbs, but over that, I'd be looking for more hp. 800 lbs will make or break me.
I'm just building a trail-rig, so highway power is no concern. I'm building a 4:1 reduction box, so maybe 75 hp might be enough?

My 72 CJ5 with a full cage and appropiate skid plates weighs in at 3500 lbs loaded for the trail. That is with a 258/t-18/20 drivetrain and 35" MTRs. This number is not a guestimate. I put it on the scales last year to see how much it weighed. And oddly enough it is almost perfectly balanced with a 50.5% front and 49.5% rear weight distribution. That was not planned it just happened.

Wow! A lot heavier than I would have guessed! Thank you all for the info.
I guess I have to rethink my engine ideas. My brother cant understand why I dont just drop in a 460 Ford! But he runs a 800 hp Dodge 1 ton that does the 1/4 in 12 secs. He needs help!!!:)

BTW: HP means nothing unless you are into mudding. What you need is low end torque. If you want to go Diesel then Drop in a Cummins 4BT. I want to do this myself. Gets good fuel economy and a huge amount of torque for the trails.

If you're only crawling rocks with it 75 hp should be plenty. Especially if you're geared way down.

Gear it down enough and you can run a brigs & stratton lawnmower engine if you want to.
