Thinking about putting a 4spd trans behind my Hurricane, has anybody used a T18, or Sm420? Adapters needed?I want to keep my Hurricane and looking for input from anybody that has converted theirs. I know it would be easier to install a T98, but those are harder to find I was told.

The Fhead T98 is hard to find,. i know of one guy running that setup near me, and i picked up a junkyard one that was not usable :( They are out there, just have to look. I am sending Nickmil my Fhead input shaft for him to hopefully use it to make a clone of it to install T18s to a Fhead... and hopefully maybe can make the original shaft to make it available for others to put a Ford T98 in from of the Fhead :)

T-98s are scarce -- or so goes the conventional wisdom. Since starting to actively look this year I've acquired two complete factory CJ5 T98 setups from the bellhousing back, including all adapters, transfer case w/ twin stick, clutch linkage, crossmember, skidplate, ect... And I didn't travel thousands of miles to get them either. Recently have come up with even more T98 and T18 (granny low variety) stuff -- must have another 4 or 5 trannys laying on the floor now, all acquired from local boneyards.

So, my suggestion is spend some time doing some serious digging around for a T98. You might be pleasantly surprised with what you can find .....

If you have the T-90 and 5.38 gears your first gear low would be a shade less than 45 to 1 which is not a bad ratio. I've towed a lot of heavy stuff around my place with this ratio and it has worked well.

With the T-98 the first gear low ratio would go to around 80 to 1 which is pretty darn low. I'm not sure how useful it would be unless one was using it for off road trail riding.

In high range it would be around 35 to 1 which is awfully low for highway use.

It's one of the reasons that the T-98 didn't sell well in new jeeps back then. It was sort of overkill.

If you do decide to get the T-98, try to get the whole jeep. Transfer case levers are different and lower floorboard transmission cover plate is different - looks home made. Drive shafts are unique for the T-98

Most of the clutch and clutch control parts are different for the T-98 application, so it is more than just the transmission and bellhousing adapter.

I've got a T-98 with a single lever transfer case in a 1970 jeep that I got off of Willys Tech board back in Jan / Feb of this year. I've never run it because I got it without an engine and I haven't rebuilt an engine for it yet.

Not for sale at the present time.
