Hello, new member here and I need some of the expert help here. I have just purchased an old jeep, and need help identifying it so that I can get on with the work. It has a steel front end still on it, but a glass cj5 body. The bodt is too long for the frame and hangs out past the rear bumper several inches. The bumper is under the tub! The grill is mounted to the frame with two bolts, one on each side. The frame has a round cross member under the grill. The title shows 1953, but the title number says 1955. I need info so I can get a body and get to work.

    Thanks

    RAT

Welcome! Pictures are gonna go a long way in helping us determine what you may have.

Sounds like a flatfender frame under a CJ-5 tub though.

Some more cluse. The hocks are held on with cotter pins and it has the threaded spring bushings. I believe it has a tailgate as it came with a steel gate that mathces the paint and rust on the front end.

Like Sparky said- you have a CJ5 tub/grill/fendes mounted on a CJ2 or 3 frame, the overhang & round front crossmember are a dead giveaway. From the cotter pins holding the shocks on it may even be a WW2 MB/GPW frame.

It cant be because the grill attatches to the frame with factory mounting tabs and bolts on both sides. If it was a cj5 grill it would have the mount in the center, right? Hey, I am alright with a cj2 or 3 and even better with a m38a1, but I want to be sure before I buy parts that dont fit. I am going to look at some cj5 parts tomorrow, and I wont go if they are not right.
    Thanks again for your help,
    PR

It can't be what? That's a CJ-5 grille, the flat fender grilles won't fit the CJ-5 hood and fenders.

Not gonna be an M38A1, like I said, flat fender frame with CJ-5 tub/grille/hood/fenders on top of it. A1 and CJ-5 tubs and frames are directly interchangeable.

O.K. I guess that maybe I am missing something here. You said that it was a flat fender, and I am under the impression that the parts interchange between them except for the 3b which is by itself, so the comment about looking for parts. I will try to pull the front clip and get some pictures.:?

Flatfender is a general description. That can be used for any of the followoing CJ-2, CJ-2a, CJ-3a, CJ-3b (High-hood), Willys MA, MB, Ford GPW and/or a Bantam BRC (but the likely hood of ever seeing one of these outside of a museum is slim to none). R)

    What's under the hood? (motor)

As for what parts I am looking for, I will need a body when I find out what I have and what choices I have. At his time, I have to find out what will fit.
