I put a WTB '75 windshield ad on craigslist and ended up some nice jeep guy gave me a brand new one he's had for awhile that was the wrong year for him. Anyway, after spending a couple hours trying to get the windshield in the new frame with no success, I took it all back apart and did some measuring of the glass, the old frame, and the new frame. It appears to me that the lip on the inside of the new frame that the rubber goes over needs to be trimmed back considerably to match the old frame and allow the glass to fit. Is it normal to have to do some trimming on a new windshield frame?

Not that it should matter for the trimming issue but this is a 1975 windshield which uses a slightly different windshield rubber setup than a '76. The main seal is not a continuous loop but rather an open piece that the two ends butt up against each other and it flops all over unless you put the second rubber piece in which fits down into a groove in the main piece. This stiffens the seal assembly quite a bit but makes it a real PITA to install into the frame. Any tips for glass replacement with this setup would be appreciated as well!

?Are you sure you got a pre 76 WS and not a post 76? I know it sounds like an simple thing but I've overlooked lots of stuff I should have caught.

I would assume the glass would fit without any problems.............

Both the frame and the glass are deff '75. The glass is 15" tall measured in the center and from lip to lip inside the new frame is 15-1/4" which does not leave room for the rubber seal. I measured the rubber thickness and added that to the 15" and decided 15-9/16 would be perfect then I measured the old frame and it was in fact right at 15-9/16". I'm thinking maybe I just have a low quality WS frame. I guess I haul out the grinder tomorrow and start trimming down to match the old frame. You ever had to replace the glass in your '74 aallison?

It possible is a two man job.

My windshield has the same rubber seal setup.
Take the locking rib out of the mounting rubber. slide your glass into the groove provided for it, slide the frame into the groove provided for it, and re-insert the locking rib.
Dish soap helps, plus a tool made of wood that will fit in the locking groove to help ease the install.

Or take the whole works to a glass shop and let them fight with it.

    Hope this helps.

And actually I think the glass is cut ( or should be) so it will fit through the space it would occupy if held by the sealing rubber.

Just be judicious with the grinder and not remove too much material.

Yeah it does help I guess, knowing I'm on the right track and it's just a PITA. Have to see how it goes once the opening is a little bigger.

Or...maybe I should skip the trimming, cut a piece of plexiglass to size and just screw it into that metal lip!

I will be taking mine to the glas shop. It's a simple flat piece of glass and it's fairly cheep to get them to do it.

Well there were a few moments when I was ready to take the dang thing to a shop but I'm happy to say I finally got the glass in without breaking it! It honestly was one of the must frustrating parts of my build so far. The only problem is the two ends of the rubber don't exactly meet like they're supposed to so I'll have to fill that in with some black silicone I guess.
