    Good evening,

Just got my first 1956 CJ5 2 weeks ago and looking to rewire. My EZ-WIRE 12 Mini should be in tomorrow. I have LITTLE and I mean LITTLE experience with electrical stuff on vehicles. Going to try my best to be patient and just take it step by step one thing at a time but can any of you experts out there give me any advice, whether it be methods or tools/ products that will extend my patience with this project. I have used search and found a few tips like laying it out in the driveway before scuttling wires everywhere but I am just worried about getting frustrated and making the whole thing harder than it needs to be. I really want to do this myself and learn about the Jeep and realize that there is probably some learning curve but would like to reduce the number of errors made and hopefully not booger the whole thing up.

Below I have a clipping of the wiring diagram for my Jeep from this site. It looks like it can be managed however there is one thing I don't know what it is on the diagram that is unlabeled. If someone could tell me what the circle in the picture that has the 3 dots in it is I would greatly appreciate it. I have it marked out with two red ? marks pointing at it.

Hi, I believe that is the flasher for the turn signals. The flasher that is marked as a four way flasher is a seperate circuit for the emergency flashers. Good luck on the re-wiring, my only advice would be to take it slow and double check everything.

No problem with little experience and that wiring diagram. Not sure about you're wiring kit, but the fuse block might throw a little added twist to the system. Circuit by circuit, patience and a little common sense you will have it done in no time! My friend laid it out on the ground first and grouped the circuits. I put the fuse box in first and grouped the circuits throughout the Jeep. I grouped temporary bundles with wire ties then just went circuit by circuit. I started with the engine compartment then dash then lights. Dont permanantly wrap the wires until almost done, I did and running the odd circuit I missed here and there was a little frustrating. Good Luck!

Whoops! I'll get that fixed, it's labeled on the V6 diagram.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Thanks everyone for the help and especially to sparky for the awesome color diagram and for clarifying the turn signal flasher.

Started late this morning with a helpful/knowledgeable neighbor and we are on the way to getting all the crusty wires replaced. Set to start tomorrow (Sunday) early to hopefully finish the job. The EZ 12 volt mini is pretty nice so far with the labeled wires. Also has more than enough fuses for this application. In addition to rewiring the stock configuration I am adding turn signals, a small but bright LED dome light with on/off switch under the dash, swapped driver side wiper with electric unit, and a brand new speedo/fuel/temp gauge (current one's speedo broken, missing needle and fuel gauge not working). Also will be fixing the horn and hopefully we will be inspection ready by this Thursday when I have an appointment.

Can't wait til it's all done. Took it for a nice cruise Friday night before the tear down and rebuild of the wiring started. It feels weird to take all the stuff out and re-wire when most things are still functional but I know it's the wise choice as some of these wires are/were so crusty that I would touch them and they would flake off exposing bare metal

I was tempted to just leave as is and fix as needed since most everything worked (minus horn and wipers, Texas doesn't require turn signals for inspection for a vehicle this old just decided to put them on anyways for safety) but neighbor made a good point when he said that this CJ was a time bomb and that one day I could be stuck somewhere needing an expensive tow because a single wire finally gave out. Will post pics someday soon of the finished Jeep hopefully. Unfortunately my awesome wife misplaced the camara to USB/computer cable. It's gotta be somewhere stupid.

    Take care and thanks again,

    -Grant
