It also bent the sheet metal around the wiper post.

The only thing i can think of is that the holes in the afermarket winsheld frame are not correctly spaced. any ideas of how to correct it? [/img]

    73. There is a keyway cut in the windshield and a small piece that fits into it on the wiper pivot. If the nut holding the pivot loosens up,
it will allow the pivot to rotate too far, thus inverting the wiper. Had this happen to me in Borrego.
Just re-align the keyway and the pivot and insure the pivot driving arm is in the correct position and tighten her up and you should
    be good to go.

73, That is exactly what happened to me! At the worst possible time (in heavy rain) the passenger side wiper would get a wild hair, start flopping around, and finally lock-up. The only fix was to swear, pull over, remove the wiper, and throw it in the back. Still, even with only one wiper, the system would sometime lock-up. It appeared that the passenger side linkage was going over-center and hanging in that position. The only fix while driving was to jamb a screwdriver into the wiper inspection port on the passenger side and knock the linkage from its over-center position.

No amount of repositioning the wiper shafts would help. My problem was traced to the wiper shafts not being parallel, the windshield sheet metal was bent so they diverged ever so slightly (wall eyed?). Your third picture above is very misaligned and will continue to fail until you fix it. I fixed my problem by placing a 5/8” dia bolt (with washers) through the passenger side wiper mounting hole so the washers clamped the windshield sheet metal tightly. I then bent (tweaked) the bolt in the direction of the driver side (the wiper mounting surface was reshaped). When I removed the bolt and remounted the wiper shaft, it was now more parallel to the driver side shaft and the over-center problem went away. Make sure to check the operation with loaded wipers, wet and dry, or the problem will continue to come back.

Yeah my wiper post was slightly bent and that caused my wiper to stick. It finally broke the linkage and then I brazed it back together. Straightened everything out and has been working great since. EVERYTHING must straight or that linkage will lock up.

73cj5, I doubt that click is normal. Can you pinpoint the location/cause?

The info in this thread has been very helpful.

Mine was clicking just before it snapped and I had to braze it back together. It broke where the brass bushings are.

ok, it just boke again  I am thinking that the wiper posts are mounted too close together. Could i get someone to mesure the distance from the conterline of one wiper post to the center line of the other that way i can verifty if the holes are punched properly. thanks

    Re: Problems with wiper likage

Bringing this back up because I just fixed mine tonight. Once my passenger side wiper got a wild hair and seized, I removed the wiper and went on with life...until tonight's inspection. The internal linkage bent as the pic below shows. I had to remove the linkage from the 'shield and bend it back to true...reinstalled and now all works well. Oh yeah, the sheet metal on the outside windshield was bent as Jim Wiseman said. I just jammed a screwdriver in the hole and pried the area even. Greased up the pivot points and now all works well (so far).

Does anyone know what years of wiper post I can use on a 71CJ5. The right one will not hold the wiper arm since both are ate up. Also what years of wiper arm will work?

    Thanks

there are other folks on here that will know for certain. they'll be along pretty soon i expect.
