Hello everybody i'm new to this forum. I was given a 1969 cj5 and everything that i've seen on the web say that it could have a 462 package. Can anyone tell me how to positvely id a cj5 with the 462 package?

    Welcome.

Perhaps you could fill us in on why you think you have a 462 CJ-5?

I thought it might be a 462 because it has th amp and temp gage on th left of the steering wheel. It also has a padded sport bar and a chrome bumper. It has two stock front seats and the mounts for the rear seat. The rear seat is missing though. It also has the harware for the spare tire carrier but the carrier is also missing. No skidplates and it dosen't have the stock wheels. Ii also has a trailer hitch like the one on the purple Renigade on this site. I thought it might be a Renigade but the wipers are on top of the windshield. Thanks in advance for any help you could give me.:flag:

    Sounds like a possible Renegade.

I wouldn't go by the windshield wiper location. WS frames swap very easily. Anything after early in 1968 should have left the factory with bottom mount wipers.

Your VIN would be more instructive in helping identify the Jeep.

I looked in the VIN identifier on this site but couldn't find my VIN. My VIN is 8305S233906. I hope this helps.

From your VIN, your Jeep looks like a very early '68 model or possibly a late '67.

That would be too early for what I've been able to gather for a 462 Jeep, those were made in '69 and there weren't many of them made.

Tubs do swap too. Very interesting. Any pictures?

I'll see if I get some pictures posted. the jeeps in pretty bad shape but no rust holes and it looks like it's about 90% there. Thanks for the help and this is a great web site. :)

I have a '69 462. The expert and authority on the subject is fctex150@hotmail.com. One of his is just 14 jeeps younger than mine.

I don't know that we've ever had a confirmed 462 located via the internet...... Got any pictures or documentation that proves it? Obviously we'd all be happy to have one located, but we're all probably a bit skeptical at this point seeing as how none have ever popped up..... on the internet.

Have any popped up? If you know of someone other than the Texas collector, please pass along the data. One of his has a complete document trail and interviews with the original owner and dealership employees. I do not have a documented chain of custody supporting the claim. All of the mechanical systems etcetera are correct and difficult to fake, however, anything is possible. Seven or eight years ago I was looking for this group to help identify my oddball. All we could figure out then was it had all the Renegade options and an odd suspension, but wasn't a renegade. Photos of the unique components were posted here back then. I have some parts getting painted now. Hope to do some nice photos in February.

Interesting. The first 2 pictures in the link seem to be of 2 different JEEPs or, of the same JEEP but in different stages of restoration/repair. Notice the different steering wheels, the cup holder, the grab bar and the hole (maybe a speaker hole) cut in the dash. Later speedometer as well.

Busmec and the guy in Arizona are the same person. He has given me 3 different vin, numbers, the last one a 69. The gauges are wrong and in the wrong location, no skid plate on oil pan, spring pacts were standard cj5, wrong role bar, and he will not send a picture of the wire harness under the hood or tire carrier. He painted it the original color, white and they only came in red!

A friend of mine asked me to do some research on a reported 462 a few months ago. I know the 462 press release exists, but I don't know if it was anything more than just that, a PR stunt. I say that because the internal designation was the CJ5.5, and there was a 462 and a 482. Only 3 482's were built, and one exists today.

I contacted someone with the build records and BOM's from that era and there is no proof I could locate that this 'pre renegade' was a production model. The only one I am aware of was driven by Johnny Cash, and it was not uncommon for AMC to place a 'special' vehicle with a celebrity as a promotion.
