Pulled up the front carpets on the old gal to take a peek for rust. Didn't look too bad. There is a material applied to the floor boards I assume is for noise suppression. It is a tar paper like material about 3/16" thick. Does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement material? My son tells me I should coat the entire bucket w/ a rolled on bedliner. Sounds like good rust prevention, but won't do too much for noise, will it?

Bedliner won't deaden sound at all. Any car audio shop should carry sound deadening material.

Jute carpet pad works well, but keep it dry.

I think that is my main concern - moisture being trapped in whatever I put down. It is a bit of a chore to pull the carpet, so I don't want to do this every few months, not even once a year!

Mmmm...and hold onto your wallet when looking at it.

I bought some ashpalt-based sound deadener from McMaster-McCarr for a motorhome I did once. It had a sticky back, and IIRC was drastically cheaper than the stuff the car stereo dealer had.

Im planning on using old house carpet foam padding. Its very rubbery and heavy and doesnt seem like it will retain too much moisture

A local used the self-adhering butyl flashing (used around windows & foundations) from a home store in his CC Dodge. While it isn't "Dynamat"... it was very reasonably priced, was easy to work with, conformed to all the weird shapes, & stuck well. He did 2 layers (1 laid end-end and another layer over it laid side-side).

It made a HUGE difference in the amount of rattles, road noise, and infamous "CTD 1500-1700rpm drone" that it muffled/quieted. Afterwards, you could hold a conversation w/o "yelling" and found his stereo had a couple of issues undetectable beforehand.

For offroad/Jeep use, it'd probably do well over some NON-textured bedliner. Should make a huge difference applied to underside of a hardtop too... not that they rattle or anything. ;)

I just found out about this stuff the other day: www.lizardskin.com

Cheap it's not... but another option.

I used this stuff in the trunk of the Caprice, but with very dissapointing results. Just didn't stick very well...

When I tear down/repaint the car when we get back from Japan, I'm definitely going with the lizardskin, I really like the idea of a spray-on material better. But that's a much more ambitious project to begin with...

When I worked as an aviation mechanic we had use some stuff the was a sandwich of 2 different types of foam with a thin lead layer between. Worked well and came in 4x8' sheets.

Can't for the life of me remember what it was called or where we ordered it from.
