I am driving along in my jeep. All of a sudden it starts konking out on me. I start it, it does 20 feet or so and it back fires a couple times, I give it gas nothing happens and it konks out on me...again. Now I can't get it to turn over. Everything was running fine the last time I had it out. Someone give me a hand with this please. Also, I think I screwed up the carb by under or overadjusting the adjustment screws. I just can't find out what each screw adjusts and how bad I messed it up. Can someone please ID which screw adjusts what? Thanks -G

    Back to basics:

    1. Is there spark at the plugs? If so, is it a nice, strong blue or is it a weak yellow? If it's yellow you have a spark/ignition system issue.

    2. If #1 is weak, backtrack a bit and pull a plug wire and repeat. If the spark at the end of the wire is strong, the plugs are fouled. Replace the plugs with four NEW ones, properly gapped. If your carb is out of whack it can foul the plugs big time.

    3. (With the engine off and safety glasses on) peer down into the carb throat and crank the throttle wide open. Do you see a squirt of fuel? If not, you have a fuel delivery issue.

    4. Can you see fuel in the glass bowl of the fuel pump? If not, the fuel line and/or the tank is full of crud. Either that, or you are out of gas. :)

    5. When you take the fuel line off the carb and direct it into a jar, have a friend crank the engine. Do you get good, healthy squirts of fuel ? If not, your fuel delivery system is suspect.

    6. Take the fuel cap off the tank, the fuel line off the intake side of the pump and blow compressed air back into the tank. Hook it back up and see if it will fire. If so, you have crud in the tank and probably also in the carb bowl. Clean it out and put a good, paper filter in between the pump and the carb. You may have to replace the tank if corrosion is severe.

Let us know what you find out!

Thanks for the info. I tried to download a picture but something isn't working right. I have two screws. Facing straight down I have one facing 9:00 and the other facing at about 10:30. Could you detail how to set these please. I will start on the carb first thing in the morning. Again, thanks. G

The screw on the baseplate is the mixture screw. Turn it all the way in (gently) and then back out 2.5 turns for a starting point.

The other screw is the idle speed screw. you set this once you get the timing, mixture and everything else set. Idle speed should be ~600 RPM or so.
