Hey guys. I have a '50 CJ3a with a 225 V6. Love the engine, but my last engine has a 1 bbl, but that engine quit on me. I found a used 225 and put it in the Willys. It runs great, except the 2 bbl starts to stall out when I am climbing. I live in the mountains outside of Denver, and the mountains is where I do most of my jeepin'. I have heard that what is happening is that on inclines, the fuel is spiling over right into the throat. So, I dropped the fill level of the float, and that definitely helped, but I had to keep it floored to keep it from stalling. Scary, on some of the hills I climb!!!! Any way, someone else said that there is a gap between the bowl and the throat, and to fill the gap with JB Weld, Liquid solder, or something like that. I can't see a gap there, so I skipped that. I bought an adjustable fuel regulator, but am having a hard time dialing it in. It goes from .5 lbs to 5.5 lbs. First I set kept the float at the lower lever, , then set the regulator to 4.0. but it was dying out going up hills on the road. Like there was no fuel. So I set the float back to normal level, and then it started flooding out really bad on hills on the street. Today, I lowered the float a little again, and it didin't flood out on the hils on the street, but had no power. I took it offroad for a little test, and it climbed a steep, rocky hill, at higher rpms, but stalled at the top of the 1/4 mile hill. I am really frustrated.

Any ideas would be really appreciated. I don't have the money now for one of those Weber off road carburetors, and would like this one to work. Thanks. R.J.

What kind of carburetor, the original V6 carb or something else?

It is a Rochester 2 bbl. I think it is off of a '73. My one bbl did not flood out, it is something specific to the 2bbl.

The 2V Rochester that came on V6 Jeeps is considered a very good off-road carb. I think you must have a problem with it; maybe too high a float level? Post a followup (not the same post - that will PO the moderators - you're not supposed to cross-post) on the Early CJ5 with your question. The posters there have a lot of experience with the Rochester 2V.

Be sure you don't have any cracks in the flexible fuel line...this same thing happened to me once and the Jeep would want to stall on an incline...I had a very small crack in the fuel line and it was sucking air in...just a thought...

Thanks. I will check that. It's possible, since the fuel line runs right in front of the engine. I appreciate and will try looking at that. R.J. Willys

thanks. I will try a follow up on the Early CJ5 forum. Yeah, I have been messsing with, and lowering the float, and also put on a fuel regulator. It is better, but still have the problem. Thanks for your suggestion.

I am in Summit County and have struggled with the same , 225 with 2bbl. I ended up switching to a Motorcraft 2100 2 bbl and have a great running heep on road at 10k elevation and steep climbs up to 13k elevation. Maybe you can try some of this on the rochester.

    jetting
extended the flaot bowl vent tube with 3/8 inch rubber fuel line to the underside of air cleaner lid as high as possble and maybe even make a loop in it.

    lowered float level a tad.

we also would experience vapor lock which I am told happens easier at higher elevations. It was like the engine would be flooded even on flat trails. Solved by using 1/4 inch gasket between manifold and adapter plate and a second 1/4 inch gasket between carb and adapter plate.

Not sure if the rochester has a center float pivot, but if it does, I believe it is not as ideal as the side pivot the motorcraft has.

The best thing I did was install a HEI from a 75 Buick 231 odd fire. What a difference in starting and all around driveability. Will be selling my complete motor spring 09. Installing a 4.3L.

Maybe see you on the trails up here.
