is their a particular reason I should use these type of fasteners on the water pump, pulley and fan assembly? Can I just use a straight set of bolts with nuts? These little buggers are hard to get out without mashing up the threads.

Can't say that I've ever seen studs used on a water pump pulley. I've only seen bolts. Lock washers or Locktite them.

I think the previous owner used the longer studs to bring the fan closer to the radiator. There were 5 washers stacked up on the end of the stud then a nut. Basically, it went like this, from back to front:

Nut/waterpump/pully/5 washers/fan/nut all threaded on the stud. The stud even has 2 different types of thread on it.

That sounds pretty dangerous IMO. Washers are not precision spacers and could throw everything out of balance - and we've seen what happens when a fan blade comes flying off.

Like gasman said, just put double nuts on the stud and jam them, then turn out the stud using the first nut that was installed. They will back out with no problem.

I'll probably just use bolts to put it all back together. I can't get the studs out of the old water pump without messing up the threads. The fan will probably sit back about an inch then it did before, but I suppose it will still work. I have an electric flex fan as well so I can still push air through.

FWIW Early GM models did use studs on w/pump and the studs were diff threads so as not to install them backwards. Those studs are still avail at some local FLAPS and are now labled carb mounting studs.

You can buy spacers to move the fan closer to the radiator. I know Summit Racing has them. Probably NAPA and others too.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the suggestion. Of course, it is too hot out to even think about playing with the Jeep....I guess I'll have to wait until fall...:rofl:
