I have a 1971 cj5 with the dauntless v-6, and its burning oil out of the passenger side pipe. The guy i bought it off of didnt torque the header bolts down properly so the bolts had worked themselves loose, and the valve cover leaked on the pass. side. so i figured that oil was leaking out of the valve cover and through the gap between gthe header and the block. That being fixed it still burns oil out the passenger side pipe. no valves are sticking and compresion is good int he engine....i dont know what else could be wrong. IDEAS???

Did you do a compression check? Sounds like rings.

Possibly residual oil left in the pipe.

x2. You sure it's oil and not sooty gas? How well does it run?

You wrote it has good compression, so worn rings are not likely. Typically you'd do a wet/dry compression check and compare the two sets of numbers.

If the smoke is blue, then it's oil. If you are burning oil in that large an amount, it will show up as black oily residue on the spark plugs. Looking at the plugs will tell you a lot.

Don't mistake too much fuel for burning oil. Excess fuel will make black smoke, and oil will make gray-blue smoke. Also, the plugs will look different, with too rich being sooty black and oil looking like a coating of tar.

Today I adjusted the carb and got it running better *not rich anymore*, and after driving for an hour or so it stopped smoking. Hasnt done it again yet so i think FLYINGYOGI was right, just oil in the pipe. And i guess it just took a while to burn out?!?!?.or sooty gas.!?!?

I had a similar smoking problem after my 71 had set for a couple of years. When I fired it up I was really concerned. But it was almost like resetting the rings and cleaning out the old gunk. After a couple of oil changes within the first 500 miles the oil quit getting dirty and now no smoke. I also have fresh fuel and a second new fuel filter which have really smoothed things out.
