F or L?

    My neighbor is giving me two junked jeeps. '65 CJ5 and '53 M38. I haven't got them home yet. He showed me one engine, I believe an F-head. Just wondering if the L-head was the stock motor on the '53.

    Double check the date on the m38, the m38 was not made it 53 only from 1950-1952. The m38a1 came out in 1952 and had the F head engine.

    What Bill said....is the one you are calling an M38 a flat fender? If so it may be an M38 but the 53 should be questioned although with the older vehicles anything can happen between DMV and the title. If it has the biscuit fenders like the CJ5 then it's more likely an M38A1 if it's ex-military.

    M38 = L-head
    M38A1 = F-head

    Pics will help once you can get them.

    If it was me, I wouldn't care either way - at least not until I got them home! Then I would figure them out.
    The engine you were shown, does it have a valve cover on top? If so then and FHead, if not then a flathead.
