Good morning. With the jeep running pretty well as my DD I think it's time to add the OD and make it a bit more practical for street driving. I was looking at Herm's overdrives and noticed there are 26 and 29 tooth models. Does that refer to the transfer case teeth? If so my transfer case is the stock D18 which one would be right? I'm also not entirely clear on what front shift and rear shift is. Can someone clarify this for me? Any help is greatly appreciated.

You need to pull the pto cover off your dana 18, and count the teeth on the output gear. Normally, the 1-18 diameter intermediate shaft has a 26 tooth gear, and the 1-1/4 shaft has the 29 tooth gear, but pull the cover to be sure. There is some good info here too:

Thank you! I'll tear the cover off tonight and verify. I really want the OD in by this weekend. Will I need to drain the transfer case oil before taking the cover off?

Nope if you have a 2a with stock Tcase you have a 1 1/8 intermediate shaft and 26 tooth gear. The instalation isn't all that bad if you have an air gun to brake the bull gear nut loose with.

The PO said the drivetrain was stock as far as he knew so I would assume so but it probably wouldn't hurt to verify. Is there anything I can look at while I have the cover off to determine the general condition of the transfer case? Also is the nut 1 1/8" or smaller? if it's over 1" I'll have to stop by harbor freight on the way home for a new socket :D

Ok so I just took the cover off and verified the 26 tooth gear. While down there I also noticed this potential problem.

If I remember correctly there should be an e-brake drum on the rear output correct? I have no handle in the tub for an e-bake and just assumed someone threw it out but left the drum but apparently not... any ides where I can find a replacement?

Well that's just super... Maybe I'll just wait until I change out the axle for the D44 and scavenge the e-brake set up from an old CJ or DJ.

Herm or Walck's have the whole assembly (used).
