I have a real doubt about the dashes in cj-5's. I'm recently looking to buy a cj-5 and I was looking for some good jeep with almost everithing original, and one thing i look the most are the buttons on the dash. Thats why I was looking for some pictures of some original cj-5's dashes. Specially the '72, '75, '76, and '79. Also throught what years were the dash the same and in what years did the dash change in the cj-5.

Thanks in advance for the pics

A little worse for wear, but exactly as it came from the dealer when my wife purchased the jeep new in 75. Plain jane jeep, 258/D20/T14 30/44, no roll bar, no passenger grab bar, no radio. You can see the factory holes for the grab bar, but the bar itself, as well as the roll bar were options.

It is my belief that the knob over the steering column was added by the dealer as a manual choke, according to my wife's recollection. Since converted to a hand throttle. My understanding is that this hole was normally covered by a dashpaint colored "button" as delivered from the factory.

Also, IIRC, all radios were mounted under the dash, in dash mounts from the factory didn't happen until 1976 along with the speaker cutouts.

    Dave,

My jeep is same year as yours. A couple questions:

What is the black and white label at left side of dash above VIN sticker?
You have a knob in the hole directly above the steering wheel, what is that?
What is the knob to the right of the speedo? I have that hole but nothing in it.

    Thanks
    Scott

    Scott,

The sticker may well be a dealer add on, as well as the locking hubs, wife did not "order" the vehicle, she bought it off the lot. My understanding is that locking hubs were an option on 75's. (sorry, photo is turned 90 degrees)

I'll just quote my first post to answer your second question...
"It is my belief that the knob over the steering column was added by the dealer as a manual choke, according to my wife's recollection. Since converted to a hand throttle. My understanding is that this hole was normally covered by a dashpaint colored "button" as delivered from the factory."

The knob to the right of the speedo is a cigarette lighter. There was also an underdash sliding ashtray, which has gone to the great beyond. The knob on the lighter matches the original knobs, so I suspect it was an option, probably in a "convenience group" with the ashtray and the sun visors, which I have removed. Tim's photo (above) has a better shot of the lighter...

Thanks everybody, I'm now looking for a pic of a '76 dash cause I'm looking at buying one... Is the '79 same as the 76'??
Also (and has nothing to do with dashes) did 1976's cj-5' came with disc brakes or drum brakes?? When was the year that Jeep's started to came with disc brakes??

Thanks again to everybody for the pics

Grouperboy's pict, first one, is of a '79. All dash's from 76 to 86 are basically the same. Some will have stock tack and clock's behind the steeringwheel. Some have dash pads. There are a few more little differences (I'm sure others will post some up) but the are all interchangeaable. The speedo's are the same. Switches and knobs in the same place.
