I rebuilt the case, drove it for about 25 miles and it started to leak - a lot! I tore it down and found it was leaking at the speedo housing, or so I thought. Ended up that the bearing backed out of the housing about 1/4 inch. Removed some of the shims, and now its doing the same thing. Any ideas on how to fix the problem?

Did you check the preload of the bearings when you put it back together? Did you use sealer on the shims? Do you have a seal on the rear of the housing? Had you rebuilt one before? Where in Pa are you located, we have several members there that may be able to help.

The bearing backs out of the case and the speedo housing stops it I Removed all shims accept the thinest one

It sounds like you somehow have it backwards. The rear cap holds the race in. The shims space it and allow adjustment of end play of the output shaft.
