I have a 71 cj5 with the 225 v6, it's hard to start when cold, but after it's warm sometimes it will start just great, other times not at all. When it doesn't start I have to bump start it, then after a short drive, I can shut it down and it will start again. Is this a carb prob, or a timing prob? It's getting fuel to the carb, I've changed the coil, plugs, resistor and fuel filter. The jeep sat for about 3 years with an occasional trip to the desert. Any suggestions?

I have an electric fuel pump in mine. I need to turn it on 4 about 30 sec. when it has not been started for a while. She will fire right up after I do that.No problems when it is warned up.

If it seems like it is having a hard time turning over then you may have a weak battery which would cause a weaker spark making it hard to start. My other thought is that your choke may be stuck open. How does it run when you finally get it started?

Need more info.. Are you running stock dist. Do you have an ign by-pass wire from "R" term on starter solenoid to the + term on coil. When was last time you replaced points/cond set the dwell? What kind of compression do you have?

runs great after warmed up most of the time, it will back fire. Battery is new. I don't know when the points were changed last. I'm thinking the problem lies in the timing.

Since it runs great after warm up check to make sure that the choke is free and working well. Also make sure your timing is set correctly. Sometimes it will back fire if the fuel mixture is off. Is it backfiring through the carb or the exhaust? Dwell will change the timing to some extent as well.

My 69 has a manual choke controlled from the dashboard.

Make sure that the cable and the butterfly valve operate freely.
I can't remeber if the 71 v6 has an automatic choke. If so adjust it a little richer.

DO NOT looki directly into the carb throat or free it with your fingers on the valve plate while the engine is running or while having someone crank the engine. ( I hate the smell of burning flesh esp. when it's mine! ;))

If it's been a while, I'd rebuild the carb, replace the points, cap, rotor, etc. Then set the dwell, timing, and idle air mixture and go from there...

Actually that's probably the best advice instead of doing this piecemeal. Come to think it, it's what I did when I first got my cj just out of habit even though it ran well.

Thanks for all the advice, I think I'll do what patrick sugested. I just had it running today, it took starting fluid to get it started, but after that it ran great.
