    First a little background....

I scored enough parts (and cases) on craigslist to build 2 D18 and 3 T90 (for $40), the cases for the D18 are 1 1/4 shaft so thats a bonus.

To make a long story short, I have rebuild a D18 to replace the 1 1/8 shaft that came on my 55 M38A1, so today I started to disassembly the drivetrain (which is off the frame) and when I took off the warn OD, I found that the PO had "gone to town" when tightening the nut inside the planatary gears...its almost completely rounded.

What are my options here? Should I just not monkey with it and send the unit to Herm? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I will post pictures of my progress later on today...time to rebuild Ross steering box.

Thanks in advance (or TIA if you're into acronyms)

First - are you sure your looking at the nut and not the lock ring in it.

If it's the nut - send it to Herm. It's too expensive to mess with and the Nut will have to be redone by someone with special tools.

that is the write-up I followed, but when I inserted the extension, it simply doesn't catch. therefore it's rounded (by the PO's dumb@$$.)

that's my problem, its rounded...im trying to size up my options and hopefully the unit is salvageable.

That's going to be a pain in the butt. that's supposed to be 1/2" drive 8 point. Get a cheap 3/4" drive extension or a 1/2" to 3/4"" drive adapter and grind it down to fit.

it looks like the lock ring is still in it to me. i do not see the special snap ring, but it does look like the lock ring is still there. the special nut that the 1/2 inch extension fits in is round. you can deffinitly see the four corners of the star ring which locks the special bolt in place.

the more i have looked at the picture, that is the locking ring. it must come out to get access to the barrel nut, which is what the 1/2 inch extension fits into. that lock ring is only about an 1/8 inch thick, but it must come out first. it is damaged from the way it looks in the picture and they can be a bit troublesome to get out when not damaged. there is a small tab one one of the four corners which fits in a groove in the gear housing, it looks like it is in the upper right side of the star. you need to turn the star washer to the left or right to get the small tab to clear and then work the star washer out.

    Lamar,
It does look kinda funny but I don't think the lock washer is in there. As I remember (going back about 35 years) The lock washer was 4 lobed with one lobe being longer and it in turn was held in place by a sort of a square snap ring. I seem to remember that you could insert the lockwasher with a 3/8" drive extension.

looks like the snapring is still in there. once it comes out, then you will see the 1/2" square opening. and it looks like you need a new lock ring when you go to put it back together

the snap ring and lock washer have been removed.

to my understanding all that is left is the "barrel nut" which is stripped.

it looks like contacting Herm is my only option.

    thanks gentlemen.

It's beyond me how you can strip one of those barrel nuts. Unless maybe the PO used the wrong sized socket extension.

Yup - lock is out - there are tabs on the lock ring that go in the ears you can see. Just fought with one of those last week :)

FWIW - I had to sharpen a piece of square stock one time to use as an 'easy out' - It made a mess of things, but we were able to get the OD off eventually.

If there's a trick - Herm will know it.

Hey Warloch, I take it you didnt damage anything else inside the OD using that square stock trick, did ya? I'd much rather get it out and send the unit to Herm to be rebuild than have to send the entire T-case...im sure that barrel nut is cheaper than the shipping costsR)

    TIA

Could try a pair of those extra long needle nose pliers and get in there to turn it. Worth a try anyway.

We nicked a couple gears, but nothing too serious. The real hard part was getting the nut untorqued with the shaft and stock. This was years ago and it got sent back to Warn for repair. My memory is not clear enough to recall all the details

    Update:

Been in contact with Herm and he said that removal of the barrel nut will require a rebuild on the entire unit and the cost breakdown is this:

    Parts 225
    Labor 45
    Barrel Nut 22

Doesnt look to bad, but what do I know. So for ~$300, rebuilt OD here I come!
