Hey guys thanks for all of the help but i got another question. I am trying to change out my speedometer gear. I have a 77 cj5 with a 258 engine and a tremec t-150 trans. and a dana 20 transfer case. I took of the speedo cable and it looks like i can get on the sleeve where the cable hooks on with a socket but nothing will fit not even a wrench. It looks like it is recessed in the transfer case so you cant get anything on it to screw it out. Is there some special tool to get that thing out with or do I need to take the whole back housing off to get to it??

I have some rear end noise, I think. You only hear it when you accelerate or if you are traveling down the highway and you hit a dip or something you can kinda feel it. I think i have dana 20 rear axle. I wasnt sure where to start, but i was putting new brake shoes on the back and tried to pull the hub to see if a bearing was going bad but couldnt get it off. So what do yall think? Rear end or transfer case??

    thanks

Why are you trying to remove the speedo gear? I ran into the same problem trying to remove it, unsolved, until I discovered there are no replacement gears available for the Dana 20 transfer. AFAIK, unless you can find a good one from salvage or NOS somewhere, there isn't much point in removing the thing.

If anybody knows where to get a replacement, please, chime in!

I also can't figure out how to get the thing out, would be good to know in case of a miracle...

thin wall socket has always worked for me, after you thoroughly clean the crud out from around it.

be careful with that hub nut, it has to be tightened to 250 ft lbs of torque, which usually means a 3/4" or bigger breaker bar with a 2-3 ft cheater; wear eye protection in case the socket or bar breaks.

you should at least sometime/someday pull the driven gear out and record the tooth and SW number for future use; when you do find one, you want to make sure it's in the same series that you're using.

I think the speedo gear is broke off in the transfer case because the cable wont turn coming out of the case but i cant seem to get the nut that is on top of the case out to get the gear out.
