I'm buying a lift but not sure which size to go with. I can get a 2" or 4" for the same price. Both come complete w/ springs, shocks, boots, u-bolts, shims and drop pitman arm. My question is, if I go with the 4" what else can I expect to deal with. The 2" is a no-brainer, pretty straight forward, simple install. But don't know about the 4". will I have to extend brake lines, drive shaft, etc?:?

I just went through the same thing. the people on this site really helped make my decission. I went with the BDS 3" kit. I got it for $488 with shocks. I sounded to me like the safty and extra work that comes along with a 4" kit was not worth it. Also many people recomended the BDS lift saying that the quality was great. So maybe look at getting a 3" kit. it's a good compromise.

If you're looking at a BDS kit... call Bob Supplee. I think you'll be impressed with his pricing and service, as many of us here have been.

The question that needs to be answered is "why do you want to put a lift on?" Is it to fit larger tires, if so what size? If you are just putting on a lift for looks, go with the easier 2" lift, if you have a definite "plan" in mind for what you want to do with your Jeep, what is it? To put a 4" lift on just to run 33" tires around town wouldn't make much sense. If you plan on going to 35" tires on a trail rig, go with the 4" lift and do whatever it takes to make it work.

If you have a 4 speed, if you go with a 4 inch lift you will probably need to shim the rear end up towards the t case. I had to do this with a 2.5 inch lift and a T 18. If I was going to go 4 inch lift I would go with 35's. Then you run into not having enough front diff for that size of tire if pushed hard(So I have been told) You might need longer driveshafts with the 4 inch.

Seems like there is always something that needs to be done once you upgrade another part.

keep the ideas and information coming guys, this is great. i am in the same boat right now. i want to put a fresh suspension on the frame i am recondidtioning and strengthening. my personal needs are maximum flex, and clearing 33's. built for trail use only. my fender's are already trimmed a bit... will a 2.5" be enough? or do i need the 4"? (i was thinking of the 4WDH kit). BUT, that 3" BDS kit with shocks sounds like about the same cost.
:? question for lynn and St.Patrick-the bds kit that comes with the shocks, are the shocks good/decent? is it worth it to upgrade them?
:? same question to anyone who has ordered the 4WDH kit that comes with shocks..?
:? with a 3" or 4" system, are driveshafts going to be a neccessity?
:? someone mentioned a 4" to fit 35's, if that works, is there enough room for the suspension to flex? and do 4" systems flex well or are they too stiff for getting that height?

thanks all:beer: and good luck with your options as well Hi5nCj

I put the 2.5" 4WDH lift and 1" body lift on my 79 and I love the ride! It took a couple hundred miles for everything to settle in place, but now it rides great on and off road. I fit 33" tires with no rubbing (well, just the frame cuz I'm still sitting on NT axles).

For offroad only - standard lift shocks are fine. If you want to run road a good bit, I would upgrade your shocks to adjustable. I loved mine - dial in your comfort.

Remember - your upgrading your somewhat flat worn out skinny springs. You'll be amazed the ride height difference. With my 2.5" lift I got 4.25" lift at the bumpers. Almost 2" in saggy springs then 2.5" in lift.

    * Spend the $35 and have it put on the rack to check front end specs after the lift. Have them print the sheet out. Will come in handy if you need shims or adjustments.

Thanks all. I've decided to go with the 2". Seems like the best choice for my application. The 5 will see plenty of off-road use but mainly road. I would never put a lift on for looks. My theory is, if your not going to use don't do it. So the 4" would be more than I need. I would'nt be runnin 35's on the stock axles anyway. Thanks for the input fellas.:beer:

so, i myself am leaning towards the 2-2.5" lift myself for when i build up my new frame. i hear many on here talk about bds, and the 4wdh kits. i would like to know who has a preference in any particular one from all the kits. i am looking at the :
    rancho
    4wdh
    superlift
    procomp
    skyjacker
    bds

i like that the procomp and 4wdh kits come with shocks (i don't feel necessary to get crazy with them-no need for resivoirs, etc). does anyone have one they love and reccomend, as well as any to NOT get and hate it?

    thanks

I agree completely... I went with the Rancho 4" years ago and you can see where it has led me, by the inventory of items I have added over the many years of ownership! trust me please.... every time I take my pal out.... people are constantly following me and asking to buy him, isn't ever gonna happen! :)

Good luck and follow the needs that you and only you have in mind for your ride! I have NO problems and have had a blast with this Jeep since I took delivery and drove my BEST Pal home over 36 years ago!
