Wheel Cylinder Replacement

Well finally got around to looking at my front wheel cylinders. Front drivers side is frozen with rust and will not move, so I'll just replace the front two, then look at the back. I am guessing that I'll end up replacing those as well. On the fronts at this point do you need to remove the the hub and backing plate to remove the wheel cylinders? Seem's that I can not get a good bite on the bolt head. Tried both a regular socket, and then a jointed socket with no luck.

 

Yes you have to remove the hub. The wheel cylinder is mounted to the backing plate on the inside. If you cannot get the two mounting bolts that hold the cylinder on, then you may have to remove the backing plate to grind or drill the rusted bolts.

 

It's the brakeline that gets tricky, get a line wrench from sears or the local auto parts, they grab the brakeline fitting better than a regular wrench. But be prepared to replace them also.

 

In fact, (IMO) be sure to remove the line before removing the wheel cylinder.
