Ok, after checking all fluids I ran the jeep down the street for the first time in 15 years. The gas tank had been cleaned out and a new fuel filter and carb has been put on. Anyway I ran it for about 300yards and turned around and headed back. It shifted good and just when I got close to the house it died. I waited about 5 minutes and fired it up. It went about 100ft and went dead again. I couldn't crank it. It has a tow bar on the front so I walked and got my Bronco and hooked it up, put everything in neutral and pulled it to the yard, disconnected the Bronco and got in the Jeep and it fired up again. I put it in gear and let out on the clutch and nothing. I put in reverse and nothing. I hear nothing grinding at all when I press in on the clutch. The clutch seems to be easy to push in. This is worrysome and I hope I didn't screw up. I DID make sure it was in neutral when I pulled it. It ran fine 15 years ago and the 37 prior to that and It never had problems shifting all that time. It shifted perfect earlier today but now since I towed it I get nothing. Any suggestions of what I have done and what I need to look at and what cost it is going to be? I can't beleive this is happening.

    Thanks

    Does the transfer case shift?

Remember to shift the T-case back into a drive position? I had some one kick mine into nuetral, drove me nuts trying to figure out why my clutch wouldn't work!

Yes it does as well as the High and Low shifter. Nothing is jammed. The T- 18 transmission also shifts. You can feel it go into gear. Its just when you let out on the clutch the jeep goes nowhere.

I wouldn't think the clutch would go out that fast.....

Is there a possibility I stripped something out? What is a pressure plate?

    sammy Coca-Cola?

Id pull the access cover plate off and look in the bell housing for a stripped clutch disc and or metal shrapnel.
Pressure plate may not cause it unless it wasn't mounted onto the flywheel

The pressure plate is the spring loaded surface that "squeezes" the clutch disc. When you push the clutch in, the throwout bearing releases the spring pressure. If you stripped something out, you woulda heard it....

Is it going into gear with the engine running? And not killing the engine when you let it all the way out? Then it isn't the clutch. Idler in the transfercase maybe?

Sammy how will I know it is stripped? Does it have to show metal shavings? One thing I noticed is that the transmission shifter is in the neutral position but the jeep won't roll forward or backward when you push it. I just tried with my neighbor.

Did you open up your rear differential? If your rear axle has decided to lock up you won't move at all, no matter what you do with your shifters.

After 15 years it's pretty likely that your axle is bone dry (or worse, full of water). Pull open the differential cover by removing all the bolts. It may be a bit rusted... try some penetrating oil of your choice (I use PB blaster but that's because it's the easiest one to find for me) to get those bolts loose. It may take a little prying to get it off because of the gasket dried on there. It's something you should do anyways as you work on this jeep. If the oil looks clean and there's a good amount you're probably good. If it doesn't look clean that may be your problem. There's some guys here that will help you diagnose your differential but if you take a picture of how it looks inside with the cover off that never hurts.

How about putting it up on jack stands, remove the drive shafts and see if the wheels will rotate? It will at least eliminate any differential problems you may have. Then you can check the e-brake - something may have come loose when you towed causing it to lock up. :?

with the jeep on jack stands, take off the pto cover and check to see if the gear at the end of the transmission is turning the gear in the transfer case

Did you put on the brakes? Maybe there was enough (hydraulic) force to actuate the brakes but not enough (spring) force to retract them because everthing is rusted up.
