Here are a few pics of my 1947 CJ-2A. It started out when I got it with a 327 corvette motor, SM420, Dana18, Locked Dana44 rear and open Dana27 front. First thing I did is buy a top for it and install a heater because we get some pretty cold winters up here in Canada.

After I started driving it for a few weeks I blew a rear u-joint and when I got investigating I realized the splines on the rear driveshaft were gone and the vibration from that had taken the pinion bearings out on my Dana 44. After counting the cost of having the rearend redone oposed to geting a new axle I decided to go with a set of Toyota axles that I had found for a decent price. In doing this I needed to swap out the D18 for somthing with a center rear output. I went with a D20 for obviouse reasons. The bolt patern is the same as the D18 and I already have the adaptor to go between the SM420 and the D18. I found a D20 for $120.00 in real good shape. So the next thing was to swap out the D44 for the Toyota 8". The axle I got was in real nice shape and lucky for me didnt need anything except new break lines and some e-break modifications.

Now that the rear axle is swaped I disconected my front driveshaft and swaped out the D18 for the newly acuired D20. The front output on the D20 was shorter then my D18 so I cut, lengthend, and rewelded my front drivshaft. The front driveshaft needs to be replaced anyway so this would at least allow me to drive to the driveline shop to have my rear driveshaft built. The only problem was that on my way to the driveline shop my 40yr old SM420 decided to get stuck in 3rd gear. Now Im stuck in 3rd gear its one of the coldest stormiest days we have had yet and I dont have reverse. I manage to get the Jeep turned around and get it home by shifting the t-case between hight and low gear. So the way it sits right now. I have a half torn apart front Toyota axle, an SM420 that needs to be pulled and rebuilt, and a Jeep with one Toyota axle and one jeep axle both of witch have diferent gear ratios. So thats my Project story so far. If your interested I will post more pics as the saga continues.

Iv started now on the front Toyota axle. Iv got it torn down and now I'm waiting on new Longfields and axle shafts. I'm also waiting on the third member that I took in to get rebuilt. Man this thing was a bugger to get clean. Took me about 3 hours just to clean the hubs and knuckles.

I got my Dana20 swapped in and on the way to get my rear driveshaft built my SM420 went out on me. Iv since taken it in and they tell me its a boat anchor. So I'm also waiting on a new SM420 from Novak conversions out of the states.

Oh, tell me about it. Other then the motor, Iv changed every part in this drive train. Well at least Ill know what has been put into it now. The new SM420 should last another 40 years if not more.

I see in the engine photo its got double hump "fuelie" heads on it. These are small chamber high compression heads. What are you running for fuel in it? Do you still have leaded fuel in Canada?

Nice 2A. Another Canadian here with a Jeep and Toy axles. I've done the trail gear high steer but not the longfields yet. I was supposed to pick up a pair Saturday but that didn't pan out. I've got an SM465. Can't wait to see more.

Man you cant beat the big strength in a small package with these axles. Not to mention the perfect width for a narrow Jeep. We dont have ledded gas here in Canada. What should I be running with those heads. Would ledded gas help it run smoother?

    Well here is a refresher.

    Built alittle armor
    [IMG]
Started to put things back together. I had to take my third member in to have it rebuilt so I decided to have a spool installed as well. So now im still waiting on my new chromolly Longfields and inner shafts.
Once I had everything out I decided to give my cross member alittle more beef. So I welded some 1/4 flat steel to the bottom.

Why dont you swap in a D20 now to get a centered rear output to match that rear axle?

Here is an update. Iv got the axle in, steering finished and rims ready to go on. I'm still waiting on my trany but it should be here in the next few days.

Here is the old Dana 27:
The Toyota axle finished and ready to go in:
Iv got the old axle pulled out:
    Then I pulled the springs:
I couldn't move the spring perches on the Toyota axle because my spring width on the 2A was going to interfere with the third member on the passenger side so I decided to widen the with of my spring hangers. So I had to cut off the spring hangers and move them 3/4" out on eather side.

Here is the new axle all bolted up:
I took a little break from the front and finished up the brake setup on the rear. It had to be custom but I think it worked out alright:

After the steering was finished I decided to buy longer shocks and build hoops for them. Now all four shocks are the same length. These pics also show the spring hangers welded up and the welds painted. Its not pretty but the paint will fade over time to match.

The axle all finished and ready for rims and tires:
These are the new Toyota rims that I got. They look alittle wonky on there because I got the wrong lugs for them so they are just hanging there for now. But you get the idea. They are Little bling up I like them.

You can kinda see it in this picture:

I just modified my tie rod and used a heim joint to conect the two. I havnt had a chance to wheel it yet so I dont know how strong it will be. I did see a guy in the last Four Wheeler mag that did the same thing and it seems to be working for him.

Yeah,I ran something similiar on a CJ-5 with 44's and big power.I never had a problem out of it (at least 3 years) i dont want to be a pain but could I see the passenger side ? Did you drill the steering arm on the knuckle or is it attached to the tie-rod ?

    Thanks

Here is the picture you asked for:

I got the axles out of what I think was an 84 or 85. I belive this because the axle truss on the bottom of the long side of the front housing spans all the way to the end. They didnt start doing this till 84. I got these axles off a guy that only had the frame with no body so I dont have a vin for the vehicle. The wsm to wsm is 55". The mesurement of my old axles was 50" so I thought that was pretty close.
