A little bit ago I won this on eBay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...STRK:MEWN:IT&viewitem=&item=330212734288&rd=1
I was mainly after the Rancho type Borg Warner overdrive. I had planned on pulling the OD off and selling the trans and transfer locally. I'm picking it up this weekend, and now I'm sitting here wondering what to do. I'd like to swap it in, but the main problem is I read that the rube adapter won't work with the PTO type OD's - I have a Koenig winch and I'm guessing it won't bolt up either.

I've been thinking though, and my father has a spare PTO drive unit for his gama goat (which uses a sm420). I could steal that, reroute the PTO drive line, and fab up a lever (and God knows what else...) to run the winch. I could then sell the Koenig drive unit to help recoup some cost.

Is it worth 6+ months of down time to get a sm420 in my mild off road jeep? I already have one creepy-crawly rig (my 75 Cherokee with a diesel and two transmissions).

I know I'm going to use the OD (I cant afford the warn type, let alone a warn and the winch adapter). Anyway, should I figure out a way to use the whole set-up with the PTO, or should I sell the trans and transfer combo after pulling the OD?

I can't answer your question as I picked up an SM420 for myself (came with a free engine too! R))... But... Do you have some pictures of the SJ? Sounds VERY neat

Sammy - I don't think I have any pics of the cherk on this computer, my laptop, but I'll try to scrounge some up tomorrow. The cherokee has an '82 j code GM 6.2 with a th350 backed by a t18 (sadly its the close ratio tranny (4.something 1st gear) not the granny low) followed by a dana 20/18 hybrid. It is running on dana 44's with a 4.something gear set. I have it all apart right now (I didn't like the crossmember style engine mount) but it will soon be back together - after the cj-6.

    I was thrilled when I went from a T14 to a granny-low T18...

Since you already have a crawler, you know the pros and cons.
If you don't intend to use the CJ in crawling situations, there's pretty much no sense in 6 months of downtime for a major mod you will seldom use...
