Crash

WEll, I jsut spent about an hour reading about Tonka (glad the Ms. is doing fine now) and other crashes in Jeeps. SO from all this, the safest is.....

Full cage tied to a boxed frame, high back seats tied to the cage, 4 or 5 point belts tied to the cage.

THis sound right?

I want to be able to roll the thing on the hwy and be fairly sure we will survive. Injured maybe, but survive.

 

I haven't fitted the seats yet, but I'm thinking I might be able to reverse the direction the toolbox lid opens. That might do it with the seat propped up. Thanks.

Looking at my 62 CJ5 project over the years and thinking about safety made me decide to re do it in a modified way. Here in Canada in the province of British Columbia you can get collector license plates on a vehicle that is returned to 100% stock and in show room condition. Insurance for these type of vehicles is only a 1/4 the cost of a normal vehicle so it is a lot to consider.
However I just could not bring myself to think that I would drive an open top vehicle with no roll protection or shoulder belt. (They will not allow me to put in a stock roll bar from a newer model so that I could attach the shoulder bet to...shoulder belts were not the law in 62...bla bla)
So my 62 CJ5 is now becoming and M38A1 style jeep with frame mounted roll bar, high back seats, 5 point seat belts, dual chamber master brake cylinder, electric wipers and a rear mounted gas tank.
I hate people thinking badly of me for modifying a stock vehicle like this but if I really want to enjoy it and use it, I have to do it for my peace of mind.

 

Lincoln Navigator v. ECJ5. Got caught in a rain storm, went into a skid. Probably going 15mph at point of contact. Damage to bumper and fender pales in comparison to the emotional pain.

Never had the chance to drive a Pinto, have you. They were really prone to gastank explosions during rear end accidents. Spectacular, but not fun!

 

I have HiBacks in the Sixty. The passenger side one doesn't fold either, but it does tilt all the way to the to the windshield. (even farther if the windshield is down.) Plenty of room to open the toolbox.

 

Nope, just the Pinto. Something about where frame bolts were.
The Police and State Troopers around here had all their Ford cruisers retrofitted with different frame mounts for the fuel tanks, cause they would explode in rear end accidents. One of the officers that survived such an accident looks like a Martian now. Got stuck in his seatbelt when he was hit during a traffic stop. Been a bunch of other cases in the news about it.:hurrican:
