1971 CJ5, 225 V-6. T-14 Transmission. I am trying to install a rebuilt transmission and transfer case. I did not remove them from the vehicle. I used a clutch alighnment tool and installed the clutch plate and clutch cover. Do I remove the clutch alignment tool at this point? Also, do I mount the clutch housing, throwout bearing and fork to the transmission before installing over the clutch or do I mount the clutch housing over the clutch prior to mounting the transmission and transfer case.. Thanks for any help.

You remove the alignment tool now. As far as the next step I have done it both ways and I prefer putting the bellhousing (clutch cover) ,fork and T.O. bearing in place first and then lift the trans/t-case assembly into alignment. When I tried it the other way it was way to hard to get at the bellhousing bolts while trying to manipulate the entire assembled unit into position. I did'nt have a tranny jack, that would of helped alot. I hope that you put in a new pilot bushing/bearing in the end of the crankshaft . Seems like the hardest part is getting the tranny mainshaft end inserted into the pilot bushing/bearing so that everything can mate up properly. Although it was a little difficult with the bellhousing, fork and bearing installed to get the mainshaft through the T.O. and then into the pilot, I found it was easier to do it that way as opposed to fussing with the bellhousing bolts which were harder to get at in my application.

I am still confused. Do I mount the clutch housing, throwout bearing and clutch fork to the transmission first prior to lifting the whole unit into position to stab the main shaft (transmision)?

It can be done that way although I think its harder. What you are calling a clutch housing I refer to as the bellhousing. That being said ,I bolted the bellhousing (with clutch fork and throwout bearing installed in it) onto the engine first. Then I lifted the tranny/transfercase as an assembled unit into place, while carefully aligning the tranny shaft through the bellhousing ,then through throwout bearing and then into the pilot bearing.Having a second person to help out is desirable, a tranny jack makes the job easyer as well.

One point to remember is NEVER, EVer allow the transmission to hang with the tip of the mainshaft in the pilot bushing and the tranny unsupported. Once the shaft is seated in the bushing, install at least one of the upper and one of the lower transmission-to-bellhousing bolts to support the transmission.

It is amazing how many folks overlook this step and end up bending the input shaft of the transmisson..
