My 68 is having a similar problem but Iv narrowed it down to the plugs being coated in oil and such. I can't let the jeep idle or it clogs the plugs. Probably time for some enging TLC.

Had to go to the bank a couple of hours ago. Got out on the hiway down here. 1st gear, fine.
2nd gear, fine. 3rd gear, nothing. Just like it ran out of gas. Couple seconds later and it slowly comes up on the power and runs along a 3 grand on the tach. Did exactly the same thing on the way back. Seems to idle fine, so I am confused. Maybe I need to dump out the tank or something.:?

Im assuming that youve already read through what was discussed, hopefully that will help you out. Otherwise prehaps it could be your slave cylinder or your clutch getting ready to give out. My buddy had the same thing happening to him but it was more like every gear after 2ed and he had to let it down to 1500 rpms before he could shift. It ended up being a bad cluctch and a couple of hundred dollars later story... Best of luck.

You know I did only check the #1 cylinder plug. I was thinking on just changing them with fresh plugs. This might work. Hopefully it does. This is getting old. I want to be ready for winter wheeling. We already have 5 inches on the ground now. Thank you for the help.

Something very similar to this happened to a friend recently on his Land Rover (yeah, I know).

The problem turned out to be that he had put in new spark plugs but did not set the gap.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents as well. My 66 CJ5 has done that from day one and I have never been satisfied it was running right. I checked timing, points, dwell, and plugs. I changed to electronic ignition thinking I would take a dwell problem out of the equation, but it still happened. And it would starve at top end as well. I discovered it was the accelerator pump through trial and error. I rebuilt the carb with a $14 carb kit and a copper float. Let me just say, OH MY GOD. Whatever problem was in the carb, is gone now. The thing is so responsive off the bottom, I can't believe I drove it before. The key though is to do all the measurements that come with the kit. I found that the float was not in the right position, nor was the accelerator rod (which may have been the problem from the beginning). She starts up cold and runs like a different beast now. Not bad for a $14 dollar uprgade.
