poor spark?

working on my '59 f head. i have a new coil, cap and rotor, points, plugs, wires. i'm not gettin much or any spark to the plugs and it will not start. it had ran fine a few weeks ago and all of sudden it started missfiring. i replaced all these parts and now it won't start at all. its getting fuel and the plugs come out with a black carbon on the ends. anyone got any suggestions? theories greatly appreciated

I had an engine that had a pale blue sometimes yellow spark that was a bad ground inside the distributor from points to housing. Repaired ground and strong blue spark. Just another thing to check.

 

My money is on the points. Dwell set? might take a small file to the contacts and insure they are aligned with each other. Also insure the coil is wired with the pos side to the ign.

 

I'm with points... Maybe even your gap. Did you check gap? I didn't see mention of them.

 

Your original problem on missfire could have been water in fuel? If so I bet it still there?

 

I do not see that you replaced the condensor. If the condensor is shorted, or shorting out, you will have a weak spark symptom. I would also check the wires under the cap that go to the points as the insulation is brittle and could have fallen off when you replaced the points causing it to short out on the breaker plate. Just a few things to check!

 

Are you getting a full 12+ volts to the pos side of the coil? You should read this in the crank mode.
