I have a 73 w/a 304. The current exhaust pipes (glass packs) run just inside along the body and exit just front of the tire.

I plan to have some custom rock sliders made (from body to body frame mounts) and want to move the exhaust pipes either right up to the frame or run them inside the frame. However, inside is quite tight and wondered if that may generate too much heat. I want to still use the same mufflers as I like the sound (plus they might just fit past me transfer case (300) and exhaust them downward and slightly outward. I could probably make some heat sheilds as well.

Any coments on inside the frame local?

I did it, but i run an underseat gas tank not a rear tank. Its a lot of bending work, but it is well protected and sounds great. I ran individual from the manifolds back and didnt bother with an H pipe. I cant get any pics for a while since its stored at my parents house though. THe floor boards get hot, but thats gonna happen no matter where you run it.

Stock location is inside the frame, but a single exhaust. Just offhand, I'd think there's enough room to drop the pipe on the passenger's side and run it back, inside the frame and beside the xfer case. The stock exit is to the rear, at each rear corner. To do that, you need to make a bend up to clear the axle. I'd think that would be more practical than trying to bring them out in front of the rear wheels. Bringing them over the frame will make a hazard - they'll get crushed.

thanks guys, I did a search on this as well and found there has been a lot of discussion. If I can find the original cross over pipe and then go with the larger diameter that may be the best. I like the sound now but after a day of trailing I'm ready to turn her off and breath fresh air.
