What are the tricks to replacing bushings in the springs? Specifically, what is the best way to gain access to the bushings? Where do you place the jack? Do you use a jack? Any common mistakes?

    Thanks.

And to those who gave me advice about body bushing replacement, thanks very much. I did it yesrterday and all went well.

You'll need a jack and jackstands. With the jeep at rest, remove the nuts from the shackle bolts passing through the bushings you want to remove. Jack up the jeep on the bumper to remove tension from the suspension. When it looks like the weight is off the suspension, place the jackstands under the frame and drive out the bolts, using a drift.

At this point you should be able to remove the shackles or rotate them out of the way. Your options to remove the bushings are varied. I've made a homebuilt press out of threaded rod and sockets before, while others like to use a propane torch to burn/melt the rubber centers out of the old bushings. A hacksaw/sawzall can then be used to cut a slot down the long axis of the out shell. Once the slot is cut the out shell can be pried out using a screwdriver/chisel and a hammer.

Helpful tools for this can include an air chisel, large C-clamp, jack, jackstands and a torch. I did this recently and found the air chisel to be a great help in removing the old bushing shell.

This has been covered in past threads as well so you might also try searching.

if you don't want to burn the rubber out, you can use a drill and small bit to get most of it out.

Keep your hands away from the springs!!! When you take the bolts out, the shackle can hold the spring from popping where it wants to go. Once I pryed the shackle forward....WHACK!!!. My dad always warned me about springs.
