WOOHOO! I got my new ignition system installed .
Went with a TFI conversion ignition system as rtecommended by my buddy, LostDawg.

Got a MSD blaster coil off E-Pay for $38.
went with a rebuilt dizzy off a '85 Grand Waggy (for the electronic ignition system) $50
Scored a deal on a MSD Off-Road 6 series ignition box, and a tach adapter for $100!
Used a dizzy cap, rotor and spacer, and plug wires off a '88 F-350 460. (Happened to have them in the garage...should'a got around to tuning the Dually sooner! R)) $free ??

After a wheeling trip over Labor Day, I helped another buddy replace his tranny in his CJ-7 (water up the seat bottoms will require that sometimes R)) and he gave me a Holley truck Avenger 4bbl carb that was flooding out. Just got it back from the shop, $50 invested! Another score! :)

Getting it all tuned out and will be testing it at the local mud drags this weekend! I'm itching to see what it will do now....

quick ?. the hot wire on the choke is ignition hot, correct? thats the last thing I need to fix before the race tonight. Install a heat riser and get power to the choke.

This "new" carb and ignition system really seems to have woke my Cj up! Just idling in the driveway and goosing the throttle feels like a ton more power is available. should do pretty good at the race tonight, if I don't blow something up!

Gotta work today, so it'll be tight getting everything ready and get to the track on time. I haven't even driven the new set-up yet, so this will be interesting! pics and video to follow (no matter what the outcome is...!)

This is the Holley? That is a 100% electric choke, so it's best to have an oil pressure switch in the circuit. Otherwise, if you turn the key on, the choke will start to open regardless of whether you start the engine or not. Direct connection might be ok for your location, and if it always starts.

Holley puts its product documents online IIRC. Summit also puts the documents up along with the Holley products they sell. Best to read the instructions from top to bottom, and read Holley's oil pressure switch instructions too.

Good point, Tim. In our neck of the woods, a direct connection would probably be fine for 9 months of the year... however, I also agree that using the oil pressure switch is the best approach, and I will be setting mine up that way (if I can ever get that darned motor finished!). My 304 didn't have the oil pressure switch and I think the direct connection was some of my cold running issues.

BTW, have fun and good luck tonight, packrat2A!
<edit> I have the documents and CD for setting up my TA and it's for the 470/670/770, so if you need it...

I do.....if the rig survives tonight....I'm not even bringing the trailer this time, so I know its going to break....

sure wish I had time to surf all my questions away....working 60-70 hrs a week and all the other stuff I do, really doesn't leave a lot of time...Now, if I worked in front of a CRT all the time....I wouldn't have to ask ?s at 5:30 in the morning before I leave for work (on saturday), so I can have an answer when I get home at 4:15 PM, and I can finish the Jeep just in time to head to the race.... Funny how that works...

Well, the mods were well worth the time. The engine has a bit more power than before....
The shafts were new about 1 1/2 years ago....

Nice set up , I have the same on my 74 , except I did not throw the 4 barrel carb on yet .

By the looks of your picture maybe I wont :)

How could you link the Holly eelctric choke to the oil pressure switch if you have a mechanical oil gauge ??

Is there another way to go, I have it direct to run hot wire and it opens to quick . Even adjusted correctly.

    lost dawg,
Nice 73. I don't see many 73's. I have a 73 also, yours is so clean. I just got it about 1 month ago and enjoy the hell out of it. Still figuring out everything as it has had some upgrades etc. She trails nice, planning to go this columbus day weekend.

    Anyway, nice jeep

    Thanks, my73cj5!
Mine had the 304, but as you can see in my avatar, I had an 'issue'.:)
It's been a blast, and packrat2A has been a great buddy to have around (sorry about the drive shaft Mike, but I told you with the ignition upgrade and TA670, you should have a little more pep...R))
Keep enjoying the heck out of it and if you got questions, ask away (just do a search first, since it may have been asked and answered already.:))
