Hey, I was planning to run a E locker 30 spline and upgrading to a full floaters. Some one just informed me that the housings are diff. or bearings are diff. or something, and that this won't work. Is this true? Is there any way to run a E locker or ARB in my Cj6, or am I stuck with a power lock? Herm is going to make a full floater kit but it's with 19 spline inners. What spline are the inners on the Flanged '70 dana 44's?

Yup. Housings are different. Dutchman said they wouldn't make 30 spline axles for the 19 spline housing because of bearing on the outside, would need to change ends. They did say some small shop on the West coast did, but I did not research further. The flanged 44 housings are 30 spline, but significantly harder to find. I stuck a lockrite on my 10 spline 44. We'll see how long that lasts. I'm going to build an offset 60 if I break the 44.

If you convert to a D44 30 Spline FF (I did a Warn Kit - no longer available) you can run an ARB or OX (like I am). Nick is going to be doing a writeup on a roll your own FF for the D44 since we can not get the Warn kits any longer.

Not sure when he plans on having it done though (nudge, nudge ;) )

I did have to make a 1/8" spacer on my D44 cover so the OX locker would work right... Not sure if it's needed for the ARB. The bearing depth is the only differance I am aware of.

Yup i found this out the hard way. You will need later carrier to run lager shafts.

When I converted my 19 spline to 30 I had to change the carrier. I am running the Warn full floater kit and a mini spool and what I discoverd was the holes on either side of the carrier were too small of a diameter to fit the new shafts. If you do roll your own I think the write in the tech section has the shaft turned down to that smaller diameter and any Moser or Dutchman can do that for you. The carrier bearing race OD are the same on all 44s of that era. It's the ID on the bearings that will be different.

the flanged uses a larger/wider wheel bearing, but the bolt hole pattern for the backing plate is slightly different (top holes are lower on the housing, but the bottom 4 are the same as 25/27/tapered).

the carriers are the same from 70-75 then late 86. you will need the correct one for you ratio (3.73 down, 3.92 up).

Are you saying that the new shafts won't fit through the axle housing?

Is it the same for the 10 spline shafts? Don't tell me that my $750.00 30 spline flange axles won't fit.

Summers Brothers said the shafts would fit 1950-1970.:?

Couple of different bearings we are talking about. First is the axle bearing which has a larger ID on the 30 spline housing than the 10/19 which is why the 30 splines don't fit. They can't get a bearing for the outer which is why Dutchman would not do 30 spline axles that fit the stock 10/19 housing. But as I mentioned, they did reference a small west coast company that did, so some sort of bearing must be out ther. The other bearing is the carrier bearing on either side of the ring gear. The OD is the same, but since the axle is smaller in diameter, the bore through the side of the ring gear carrier is smaller than the 30 spline axle. This can be solved by replacing the carrier with a 30 spline Detroit, or if running a Lockright or Aussie, with a later Dana 44 open diff carrier.

I am running Dutchman 30 spline flanged axles in my 65 cj5. I bought the parts to do it from parts mike. Also put in a 30 spline detroit locker.

What are you doing for axle bearings? My call to them said they wouldn't do it, that I had to change the housing ends. Do 10 spline and 19 spline use different housing ends and bearings? Mine is a 10 spline.
