Just got done talking with my mechanic. I asked him to put a proportioning valve on the brake system. The guy who did the disc brake conversion didn't put one on. He told me the brakes are just find but they are manual brake which require more pedal force to work. It feels to me that only two wheels are braking but I don't have the knowledge to argue with the mechanic. Beside he said he can't find a proportioning valve to put on the Jeep OK, here are the questions: Do I need a proportioning valve? What proportioning valve do I need and where do I get it? BE SPECIFIC I need to tell him buy this valve from this place! Oh by the way I need the information by Friday! The valve will be going on a 1974 CJ5.

I assume , you put disc brakes on the front Dana 30 .

If he left the stock drum bake proportioning valve on , it needs to be swapped out for a Proportioning valve from a later CJ that had the disc front/ rear drum brake set up.

Did he swap the master cylinder out also , for a disc/drum brake master cylinder ? Or you could also pull the check valve out of the front brake port in the stock master cylinder .

I have done the front Chevy disc swap on my 74 Cj5 , I swapped a later disc/drum proportioning valve and installed a new master cylinder from the later also. Works great .

when i first did my disc brake conversion i kept the stop mc with the check valves removed. But then i noticed that the rear brakes were wearing REALLY fast and the front was not doing much work. i switched to a 82 jeep mc (With manual brakes). I had to swap out the pushrods to get it to bolt up but other than that is was simple. I also added a ajustable proportioning valve on the rear brakes , to reduce the pressure to get the rears to lock up slightly before the fronts. It stops much better now than it did before. It is possibe that you will need a new mc and proportioning valve.

Here's the adjustable proportioning valve I used from Wilwood. Bought it from Summit Racing.

Here's how I was told to check if you need a proportioning valve. Find a gravel or loose dirt road. From about 20 mph apply the brakes. If the rears lock up first you need to install a proportioning valve so you can reduce the pressure to the rears. With the adjustable one you can dial them right in. Sounds kinda hokey, but it works.
