The '77 would have come with a 258 (4.2L) carbureted engine. An '89 Cherokee should have a 242 (4.0L) engine with the Renix fuel injection. The two engines are mostly interchangeable, being the same block except for a different bore size. The 4.0L engine uses a different flywheel, which could have a different ring gear tooth pitch, and may require a different starter.

Your best place to ask this question is probably on this board http://www.cjoffroad.com/forums/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=24 which is specifically about putting the 4.0L engine into CJs. They would know the best about any compatibility problems.

PS don't be surprised if the moderator moves your post to the Intermediates forum - that's the place for tech questions about CJs from '72 on.

the 4.2 and the 4.0 do use the same block, but I think the flexplate is going to be different. I know that with manual trannys, the flywheel, clutch and pressure plates are different part numbers between the 4.2 and 4.0.

Yes, flexplate. He has to use the TH400 flexplate.

Another point - the Jeep V8s with the TH400 have a thin bushing in the back end of the crank to support the front end of the torque converter. Not sure about the 258 with a TH400, but it probably does too. Later engines (1980 on) didn't have it, since the end of the crank is already the right size for the Chryco automatics (TF 904, 999, 727) used in that era.

If you use a later engine, it may need this bushing to keep the flex plate aligned with the starter. Not sure about this, but it's definitely different for pre v. post 1980.

You out there bucket? Welcome from Boston!

The motor is a 4.0 with a carb on it.
The flex plate and starter are both new. I got them both for a 79 so they should match up. ( know Im going to have to check and make sure I didnt get a 89 flex plate) The old flex plate made the same noises the new one did, but the old one could be the wrong fly wheel to. thanks for the info, I'll check out the other page as well.

Bucket, did you read and understand my post above? Just want to be sure you understand about the bushing that goes into the crank end.
