So I'm driving down the interstate in my 63 Cj5 w/Dauntless. Running along just fine and pop pop pop, starts missing, like running out of gas (or fire). Limp along to where I'm going and let it sit for awhile.

Problem continues intermittently for the most part. Can be replicated if you run up the rpm's in 3rd and never makes it to WOT before stumbling. I don't have a tach, but it's always in the same range. Letting off the gas and driving slow and easy helps, but it still has some intermittent bucking.

What I have done thus far:
*Replace electric fuel pump with another. System worked very good before. Nothing changed before problem.
    * Replace bronze filter in carb
    *Replace coil
    *Replace plugs
*Replace plug wires--cap and rotor button appear brand new, as does points/condenser setup
*replace vacuum line on vacuum advance. Tested vacuum advance by removing cap, sucking on hose. Moves under pressure.
*Drain gas tank and put in fresh. Drove it 30 miles to get out old gas.
*Rochester 2G looks mounted fine. Had been adjusting on the lean/rich adjustment on drivers side, cause I thought it was idling too low, making the oil light come on.
*Spark seems plenty hot enough (enough to light me up :D )
Cannot replicate problem sitting at idle. Ran like a champ before the all-of-a-sudden problem. Almost wish it would quit so I can figure out what's wrong in the equation.

Amp idiot light works and not coming on at any time during problem. If I could remember where I placed my Fluke, I'd test the alternator output.

Time to start rebuiding the carb? Plan on getting an inline filter and regulator tomorrow, but it worked very fine before this started.

Your time and help are greatly appreciated.

I ran into a strange intermittent miss on my 225; problem was with the coil not grounding to the engine very well. Engine gook -> Not a good conductor!

    good luck!

    EDIT:
Of course I see you mentioned changing the coil...

Sound like points bounce to me . The spring on the points can been over heat if you leave the key on . The points look new but spring is weak.

Popping sounds like lean mixture. You said you adjusted idle screw due low oil pressure light on at low idle? Does this mean that your idle changed after this happened? Sounds throttle position is related, or can you duplicate this at same throttle position in second gear?

My 65 was doing this and I replaced a boat load of things until I discovered it was the ancient aftermarket amp gauge hanging there on the bottom lip of my dash. Took it out and all was fine. If you have an amp gauge, get rid of it or get a new one. You mentioned amp idiot light. Didn't know there was one in 63. Mine is the F-134 but I would suspect the electrics to be very similar. Good luck. - Bananaman (no, my jeep's not yellow)

Ran the idle up previously, but I don't think that's it.

    Not points or condenser.

Carb gasket seems okay, had to order a new one, try that tomorrow.

poping coming out the carb or tailpipe? could be a number of things, camlobe wiped out, float sticking, bad condenser, bad coilwire, low voltage to coil, the list goes on and on,check out the simple stuff first and check it out real good, may even have a stoped up intank filter if it has one

I had the same problem yesterday, I had plenty of fuel going through the filter and it looked clean. Finally I took the fuel filter out and replaced it with the spare and the problem was fixed. I run an electric fuel pump and a bypass fuel filter the bypass on the filter was plugged.

One other thing to check for is a bare spot on a wire in the ign system, could be going to ground.

I had a problem back in June. Replaced a bunch of stuff. Turned out to be a bad connection at the wiring harness plug. Tightened it up and all's well since.

Asked my uncle this over the weekend, below was his first guess.

Turned out to be float was sitting too low (almost bottomed out) or had creeped down. Bent it up a little and it's running great now. Insides of 2G looks brand new, I'm thinking PO didn't set it right or something happened. Runs like a scalded dog now.

    My problem is even goofier!R)

Just out bouncing around the desert this afternoon and the ol' F-134 runs great.
get back on the pavement and she runs like a three legged hobby-horse:? for about 3 miles. Then back to normal. When she cools off I'll check the points and plugs. Just think it's strange to have it run excellent off road and really bogged down when back on the pavement. Could be something in the tank I suppose, but this is the first time since I bought her a year ago.:):coffee:
