My '75 CJ-6 got around 14 IIRC. This was a brand new one though, and had a T-14 and 3.73 axles. Mostly CA freeway driving.

I haven't had my 79 CJ5 with the 258 for long but the little city and country driving I have done, I have been getting around 12 to 14mpg.

    Wow, 19, that's amazing.

I get 12 in town. Never driven it far enough to check highway mileage.

I have a 258 single barrel carb with a 3 speed manual. I seem to be getting right at 19-20mpg Driving though is normally 45-55 minimal stopping, so I'd say that's as high as your going to see it.

I know the feeling, my other Jeep (98 ZJ 5.2L) gets 12.5MPG average. So I see a gain of almost 50% when i drive my CJ

My 304 powered 74 CJ5 gets 20mpg on the highway driving 55. Get it in town though and forget it. It still has the 3.73 gears in the rear with 35 inch tires. I am sure it will drop a bit when I go to the 4.56 gears. As it sits now at 55 I am turning 2000 RPM. Comfortable cruise right now is about 70 MPH but the gas mileage suffers. Over that the vibration gets pretty bad.

Is your speedometer correct? Bigger tires will change the final drive ratio, make it read incorrectly, thus your odometer will be incorrect. Can make a dramatic difference in calculating mileage.

I use GPS for speedo/odometer... I have been really struggling with the whole speedometer thing.

Mine is an 80 CJ-5 with DUI HEI, stock BBD, 4.10's with 32 BFG MT's. Got my speedo corected then took gas mileage. Surprised that I am getting 16-17 MPG HWY.
