I have an old bus wheel that has many cracks and needs to be replaced. Since the PS is on and working I figured I would go to a smaller wheel - ie Grant. After searching here and abroad, shallow dish on a 13"- 14" diameter wheel is what seems to be preferred. I have the pullers and have begun PB Blaster, going to use the correct Grant adapter #4405. What wheel should I go with for easy of install and maximum gut room?

sounds like you have a plan. I have the same setup. I did modify mine more by breaking the welds on the column to the dash bracket, i pushed the tube inclsoer to the dash, and i cut my dash up higher to bring it up more. But that takes alot more modifying. But since you are in the neighborhood swing by and have a look :)

I too wanted a small, shallow dish steering wheel. The best I could find, at an affordable price, was the Grant 650. It's 13" diameter and 1.50" dish.

I would not personally want to go smaller. I wouldn't mind flatter, but the no dish wheels I found were all a bit larger.

Downside is that there's no way to make the horn work as far as I can tell. Install was easy with the grant adapter (well, easy after the bus wheel finally came off).

I'm pretty sure that adapter 4405 is the right one, looks like:

That's the adapter I use with the early column. I like a smaller wheel(more room)but the Bus wheels aren't too hard to repair with epoxy.

In my '71, I swapped a tilt column and stock steering wheel from a '78 CJ5. Not sure what the diameter of the wheel was... but it felt right with the power steering.

Yep , those are custom. I'll drive it a little while longer with the bus wheel. Then I'll make my decision. My goal is an easy to drive Jeep on the pavement that can tackle some medium style trails offroad. On to the front hoop project.

Small wheels will make the problems with all steering parts more pronounced. I have to agree with the stock wheel from 76 to 84 cj will work very well. Also the wheels are in many GM cars. 3 and 4 spoke in 70 mid size cars are not to hard to find. Full replacement of shaft and wheel is possible. The CJ 76 to 84 is a GM collum. My 69 camaro, 73 elcamino, 79 blazer, cj5 79,80 all have the same collum.Just some food for thought. when changing some of these collums I changed out to tilt, I found out they all use the same parts. The main switch on a regular collum and tilt collum is the same but turned upside down on the tilt collum. I have found many older jeep wagons in the junk yards with tilt, auto, and other nice additions. If you get one from a yard get everthing, shaft, under dash plate, wire connectors, and even power steering. If you get everthing its not to hard to change out.

    I have a Grant #832 steering wheel I'm gonna install next weekend. It's 14 3/4" in diameter with a 3" dish.
